Golfer gets a Lotto hole in one
June 30, 2011

A semi-pro golfer from Uckfield who survived a nine hour operation to remove a brain tumour when he was just 18, has now enjoyed a second dose of monumental luck after his Lucky Dip ticket returned a very healthy £134,457 in the Lotto draw from Saturday 4 June.

Avid sportsman Jimmy Dean (24), who works at the Lewes Golf Club Pro Shop, was busy chasing a wild rabbit out of the storeroom when he checked his email and saw the 'Congratulations' message from National Lottery HQ. Not necessarily a believer in luck, he is now changing his tune and wonders if the earlier visitor might have been a lucky rabbit!

A stunned and happy Jimmy said of his win, "Once I'd 'escorted' the rabbit off the premises and read the email, I started leaping about like a mad thing. It was pouring rain and there was nobody in the shop, or even on the course, to share my news with so I rang a really good friend and told him I was buying a Ferrari. The Ferrari hasn't quite happened yet and all I've bought so far was a very posh cake for my mum when I attempted an extravagant shopping spree in Brighton on Sunday!"

Things haven't always been so easy for Jimmy, who currently lives at home with his parents; "When I was 18, playing rugby at county level for Sussex, I was knocked out a few times and was then diagnosed with a brain tumour. Fortunately the tumour was benign and I have managed to make a full recovery. My mates have decided that this win is the karma offsetting that time of my life - I mean, not only did I have an operation but I had to cancel a lads holiday in order to have the operation!"

As a result of his treatment, Jimmy's sporting life took a different turn when doctors advised that he could no longer play contact sport. Not one to rest on his laurels, Jimmy enrolled in a Sports Management and Golf Studies degree and took up golf instead. Turning professional this year, the win comes at a perfect time as it will help towards travel costs to golfing competitions, maybe a golf clubs upgrade and Jimmy's PGA course.

There has been some more planning about what to do with the winnings since the chocolate cake purchase. Pragmatic to the last, a new car is not on the list, at least not until Jimmy has used up the full tank of petrol in his 15 year old Corsa. "I'm not too bothered about a new car at the moment but I've promised my dad one. Mum will probably get a trip to Scotland and possibly an iPad for my younger brother. My friends are really important to me so they are also going to benefit from the win with a VIP night out this Saturday in Brighton, my shout."

Jimmy matched five main numbers and the bonus ball with a Lucky Dip line. He played online at . Playing online means you never have to check your numbers or worry about losing your ticket.
