Double celebration for Ian Wright at Monte da Quinta
November 3, 2011

Arsenal goal-scoring hero Ian Wright had double the reason to celebrate at Monte da Quinta as he took first place in his own golf event while raising £40,000 for charity.

The luxurious Algarve resort hosted 60 golfers for the three-day Ian Wright Golf Classic in aid of the Willow Foundation, a charity providing young people with serious illnesses fun days out, giving them a break from the reality of their condition

A host of celebrities took to the fairways alongside Wright including West Indian cricket legend Brian Lara; ex-England footballers Les Ferdinand, David Seaman and Teddy Sheringham; former BBC radio presenter DJ Spoony; ex-Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke; and Willow Foundation founder and Arsenal goalkeeping-legend Bob Wilson.

And Wright emerged victorious in the inaugural event, captaining a team containing

Sheringham, George Gros and Tony Bolton to first place over Quinta do Lago's South course, winning by just a single point.

But most importantly to the Arsenal fans' favourite was the tremendous fundraising effort for such a worthy cause.

Wright said: "I have been very fortunate in life - I continue to live life to the full and look forward to every day. Sadly for many who are coping with the difficult realities of life-threatening conditions, this is not the case.

"I wanted to make a positive difference to the lives of Willow 's beneficiaries and a golfing event seemed the perfect way to combine a hobby that I love with a cause I feel passionate about. The money raised from this weekend will help make many more special days a reality."

In addition to golf, guests sampled the hospitality of the Monte da Quinta resort across the three days, enjoying a welcome barbeque; an evening with Ian Wright featuring a question-and-answer session with celebrity guests; a champagne reception; and a gala dinner and prizegiving.

Attendees were also able to sample a host of surrounding leisure options in their free time including horse riding, clay pigeon shooting, tennis, water sports and Monte de Quinta's Magnolia Spa, as well as playing Quinta do Lago's other golf courses, the celebrated Laranjal and North layouts.

Located in the heart of the prestigious Quinta do Lago estate, Monte da Quinta boasts a collection of 132 self-catering suites and a range of two and three-bedroom townhouses and spacious villas. All townhouses and villas come with private pools.

The resort is an ideal base for a lifestyle vacation, located close to the Algarve 's famous golden beaches and surrounded by leisure options including championship golf, tennis and water sports. On-site there are a number of dining options, an extensive Kids' Club and the Magnolia Spa.
