Monte Rei Golf to host 2012 Sir Michael Bonallack Trophy
December 1, 2011

Monte Rei Golf & Country Club is delighted to announce that it will host to the Sir Michael Bonallack Trophy between the 25 & 27 April 2012. Famed for its Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course, the first of its kind in the Algarve, Monte Rei has frequently been ranked within the top courses in Europe, and the world. The announcement that such an important amateur golf tournament is to be held at the resort in 2012 is testament to the growing reputation of the course.

The match is contested in matchplay format between elite Amateurs from Europe against counterparts from Asia/Pacific, and is played over three days. The first two days comprise of five foursomes and five four-ball matches, with all 12 players from each team then competing in singles matchplay on the final day. A win counts as one point, a half yields half a point and a lost match returns zero. In the event of a tie, the trophy shall be retained by the holders. Both teams will reside on-site within Monte Rei's luxury rental accommodations for the duration of the Event, and will enjoy bespoke functions within the Resort prepared by Monte Rei's celebrated Chef, Jaime Perez.

A bi-annual competition, 2010's Event due to be staged in India was cancelled as a result of the Icelandic ash cloud which disrupted air traffic worldwide. As such, this is the first time that the tournament has taken place since 2008, and with the European team trailing historically with only two victories to the Asia/Pacific teams' four, there is certainly strong motivation to maximize home advantage in Portugal with a win at Monte Rei next year.

The EGA's Selection Committee is currently looking to finalize a team of 12 (male) players to represent Europe , with announcement of the squad before Christmas by Andrew B. Morgan, the appointed Captain to the European Team.

Director of Golf at Monte Rei, Iain McInally said: "We are very proud to be the hosts of such a prestigious event within the amateur golf calendar. With previous entrants including Rory McIlroy and the Molinari brothers (Edoardo & Francesco) who have since enjoyed Ryder Cup success, as well as Pablo Martin, Gonzalo Fernandez-Castaño, Oliver Fisher, Danny Lee, Richie Ramsey & Joost Luiten who have all since won Events on the European Tour, we are extremely excited to bring a new host of emerging talent to our course. We look forward to enjoying a closely fought tournament over the three days on a fabulous golf course."

Monte Rei is rapidly gaining recognition around the world as a premier golf and family destination and, since its opening four years ago, has been ranked as the number one golf course in Portugal by Golf Monthly. This year has seen a number of developments at the resort, with the introduction of two and three-bedroom rental villas, along with the opening of Veranda, which includes a restaurant and bar, tennis courts, pools, gymnasium and spa.
