Matteo Manassero reaches 33rd in the world
April 18, 2011

Matteo Manassero gave himself a €288,465 birthday present with his second European Tour win at the Maybank Malaysian Open. The Italian, who turns 18 on Tuesday, started the celebrations early as a closing 68 helped him finish 16 under and see off challenges from Grégory Bourdy and Rory McIlroy. “I couldn’t imagine anything better – going back home to celebrate my 18th birthday and my second victory on The European Tour,” he said, after climbing to a career-high 33rd on the Official World Golf Ranking, a jump of 24 positions. McIlroy, who finished third, rises two places to world no. 7.

Brendan Steele led from start to finish on the final day of the Valero Texas Open to claim his maiden PGA Tour title. The 28 year old American took a one-stroke lead into the final day and a one-under round of 71 was enough for him to win the title by one stroke from Charley Hoffman and Kevin Chappell. Steele improves 99 spots to 132nd in the Official World Golf Ranking and becomes the fifth first-time winner on the PGA Tour this year, after Jhonattan Vegas, D.A. Points, Gary Woodland and Charl Schwartzel. He is also the seventh player under the age of 30 to win on Tour this season, and achieved this in just twelve starts, making the cut six times.

Tadahiro Takayama's one-under-par final round of 70 saw the 33-year-old clinch the opening event of the new Japan Golf Tour season - the Token Homemate Cup - by two strokes from Shingo Katayama. Takayama collected five birdies and four bogeys at Token Tado Country Club to finish eight under par and two clear of Katayama, who also carded a 70. Ryo Ishikawa finished third on five under par. Takayama moves to World Number 131, a jump of 78 positions.

Due to continuing fog, Round 4 of the Fresh Express Classic on the Nationwide Tour was canceled. Daniel Chopra, the 54-hole leader, was declared the winner moving him to World Number 351, a jump of 196 positions.
