PGA Catalunya maintains Top 100 spot
August 14, 2011

PGA Catalunya Resort's status as a World Top 100 Golf Course has been reaffirmed following the release of the influential  Golf World  rankings for 2011, published in the magazine's September issue.

The acclaimed 36-hole golf resort, near Barcelona - a two-time Spanish Open host and venue of the European Tour Qualifying School Final Stage 2011 - has maintained its position as one of the world's finest venues, and is again one of only two golf courses in Spain to make the exclusive list.

PGA Catalunya Resort's dramatic Stadium Course, which has consistently received the highest praise and is ideally augmented by the challenging Tour Course, was placed 98th overall and number two in Spain - out of more than 30,000 global contenders.

"To be classed once more among the world's Top 100 Courses is a significant achievement," said Miguel Girbes, PGA Catalunya Resort Golf Manager.

"With no less than 11 elevated tee shots that give the golfer a dramatic and exciting perspective of the hole in front of them, the Stadium Course is one of the most memorable golf courses one can play," he added. "Combined with sweeping fairways, mature forest, strategic water hazards and fast, true-rolling greens, it is a compelling experience any golfer

"To be ranked alongside courses of the quality of Pine Valley (#1), Augusta National (#2) and Turnberry's Ailsa course (#4) is a credit to the designers, Angel Gallardo and Neil Coles, with European Golf Design, who have produced, without a doubt, one of the finest courses in continental Europe," Miguel Girbes continued.

PGA Catalunya Resort is currently expanding and upgrading its practice facilities which will set it apart from other resorts in Europe. This is thanks to a new, one-of-a-kind, approach-play area that uses three greens, each with different grasses (bermuda, bent and poa), and five bunkers, each with a different type of sand (Augusta National supersand, St Andrews links, Hawaii volcanic, parkland and windy-course).

This new facility will allow players to recreate every possible shot from anywhere in the world, an unprecedented concept for practice facilities in Europe.

PGA Catalunya Resort has once again been selected as the venue for this season's European Tour's Qualifying School Final Stage - the fourth successive year it has hosted the event. Both the popular Tour Course and Stadium Course will host the six-round tournament from December 10-15.

The convenient proximity of the resort to Girona-Costa Brava airport, a major hub for Ryanair and other European airlines, means that golfers from across the UK, Ireland and continental Europe are less than a two-hour flight away.
