Girls shine in PowerPlay Golf showdown
May 31, 2011

Triumph for Swedish Rookie Caroline Hedwall in the new exciting, faster format of golf, writes Carly Cummins from Celtic Manor

The world witnessed a demonstration of extreme target-seeking skill and tactical play in a new faster and more exciting form of golf at Celtic Manor, Wales yesterday when 12 of the top players from the mens and womens' games took part in the first ever PowerPlay Golf event - IGNITION sponsored by Saab.

Caroline HedwallAnd it was the women who stole the show taking the top three spots on the leaderboard! Young Swedish star Caroline Hedwall (right) arrived to play the new 'risk and reward' two flag format of the game over a shortened 9-hole Twenty Ten Course at Celtic Manor fresh off the back of her maiden Ladies European Tour victory in the Allianz Slovak Open. And her putter stayed hot as she rolled in three crucial PowerPlay birdies, in the closing three holes, where she went for the harder black flag to double her points and cruise to a 32 point victory - three shots clear of her nearest rival fellow Swede Helen Alfredsson, while American LPGA star Paula Creamer finished a shot further adrift.

"It was a lot of fun!" said Hedwall who picked up the winner's prize of £100,000 - 50% of which she is donating to the Swedish Golf Federation. "I was in the middle of the pack with three to play but knew I still had a chance with PowerPlays in reserve. I simply chose to take them at the right time."

The Celtic Manor crowds were thrilled to see golfing legends Gary Player and Ian Woosnam test their skills alongside major Champions John Daly and Graeme McDowell, Ryder Cupper Ian Poulter and Paul Casey.
"I think this is just what golf needs," said 9-time Major Champion Player. "In a climate where golfers are leaving the game we need to try something new and PowerPlay offers that faster, more exciting alternative - just like 20/20 has worked for cricket. I'm planning to design many courses around the world that are set-up for PowerPlay."
