TGI Golf dozen set to shine at Ashworth Cup
July 12, 2011

TGI Golf's dedicated members travelled the length and breadth of the UK in an effort to be a part of the buying group's Ashworth Cup team to take on rivals Foremost at The Grove on August 15.

Members had four opportunities to qualify for the team - which won the inaugural match at The K Club last year - with regional events being played in Scotland, Ireland and two in England. The top two players in each qualifier cemented a place in the team.

Downfield Professional Kenny Hutton - who was part of last year's victorious Ashworth Cup team - travelled more than 600 miles to play in two qualifiers at Ranfurly Castle, Scotland, and Stockport Golf Club.

Although he narrowly missed out on automatic selection on both occasions he has been rewarded for his dedication with captain Parnell Reilly naming him as one of his four wildcard picks.

Mike Deeley was another TGI member showing dedication to the cause as he sailed over from the Channel Islands to compete in The Lambourne Golf Club qualifier.

The La Moye Golf Club Head Professional failed to gain automatic qualification, finishing third, but will take his place at The Grove after picking up a wildcard entry from the TGI captain.

Explaining his picks Parnell said: "Both Mike and Ken showed tremendous dedication in taking time out of their busy days and travelling great distances at their own expense. Both only just missed out on automatic selection and I wanted to repay their enthusiasm for the competition."

"Having played last year I was desperate to be involved again," added Kenny. "I was leading in the clubhouse at Stockport, but was beaten by the final pairing to come in, which was devastating. I was over the moon when Parnell called to hand me a wildcard."

Shipley Golf Club Head Professional Nathan Stead undertook a 430-mile round trip from West Yorkshire to compete at the Scottish Qualifier at Ranfurly Castle, an odyssey that proved fruitful as he won the event to book a place in the team.

"I had spoken to a few of the lads who played in last year's match at The K Club and they were telling me how great it was so I was desperate to be involved, but could not make my nearest qualifier," said Nathan.

Keen not to miss out Nathan packed his clubs, clothes and young family into the car for the four-hour journey to Renfrewshire.

"I took the opportunity to have a few days away with the family," Nathan added. "On the final day I played in the qualifier and conditions were very tough. It was a great surprise when I handed my card to Parnell and he said, 'That's the leading score and there's only one group to come in.' It was a great end to a wonderful few days and now I cannot wait to play at The Grove."

Parnell has plenty of experience in his team with Barrie Stevens (Beau Dessert), Craig Sutherland (Cherry Lodge), Stephen Hammill (Lisburn) and Gordon Cattrell (Middlesbrough) all making their second appearance in the Ashworth Cup.

Craig and Stephen booked their places in the team through the qualifiers, while Barrie and Gordon were Parnell's other two wildcard picks.

"It is good to have some of last year's team with us again," added Parnell. "They know what it is all about and can help those who haven't been involved before.

"Winning the Ashworth Cup last year was a tremendous achievement for TGI Golf, but retaining it will be even bigger and I'm quietly confident we can do so."

Making up the rest of the TGI Golf team are Ryan Pudney (Mundesley Golf Club), Neil Colquhoun (Merchants of Edinburgh), Paul Stevenson (Portadown), Michael Nesbit (Westerhope) and Simon Eaton (Nelson).

Eddie Reid, TGI Golf Managing Director, said: "Our members are tremendously dedicated to the group and everything we do. This was proven with the lengths some went to in their quest to represent TGI at the Ashworth Cup."
