200 budding golfers attend Open Weekend at Aldwickbury Park
September 24, 2012

In the wake of an extraordinary summer for British sport, more than 200 visitors flocked to  Aldwickbury Park Golf Club  for the opportunity to give golf a go for free.

Following the success of Britain's athletes at the Olympic Games, plus Tour-de-France victory for Bradley Wiggins and wins across the pond for Andy Murray and Rory McIlroy in their respective major events, there has been a surge in sports participation across the UK.

Visitors to the Open Weekend at Aldwickbury Park - part of BGL Golf, the UK's leading golf course owner and operator - were invited to try out a sport that sees a return to the Olympics at the Rio Games in 2016.

Although not generally perceived as a particularly athletic sport, golfers routinely walk between four and eight miles during a round of 18-holes and can burn roughly 1,000 calories in the process as their heart-rates can get up to around 90-120 beats per minute, which helps strengthen the heart and lungs, and can help reduce weight.

Eager to capitalise on these benefits, plus a special discounted green fee, more than half of the visitors to the Harpenden based club took to one of one of the finest 18-hole golf courses in Hertfordshire, designed by former Ryder Cup star and BBC commentator Ken Brown, the Park Course.

Visitors were also invited to take free lessons with the club's expert coaches and PGA Professionals as well as free golf on the exceptional nine-hole Manor Course, which has holes ranging from 50 to 150 yards maintained to the same high standard as the main course.

Andrew Shewbridge, Aldwickbury Park Golf Club General Manager, said: "The exceptional summer of sport has motivated more people than ever before to get active, get fit and get healthy.

"Golf offers people of all ages a good work-out and the opportunity to get outside in the fresh air with their friends.

"The weekend proved a hit with visitors from across Hertfordshire and neighbouring counties as we signed up five new members and 120 people also signed up for our new Player Card, which gives holders significant discounts on green fees and items in the pro shop not only here, but at all nine other BGL Golf centres and clubs across the country."
