The Belfry's Robert Rock seals Abu Dhabi win
January 31, 2012

Only seven months after winning his first European Tour title at the Italian Open, The Belfry's Robert Rock claimed a composed one-shot victory in the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship, seeing off Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy to propel himself into the world's top 60.

Rock - whose affiliation with The Belfry extends back over six years - had led overnight with 14-time Major winner Woods but showed ice-cool composure to edge ahead of the American and stay clear of European Ryder Cup players McIlroy, Graeme McDowell and Thomas Bjorn in a final round that boasted five birdies.

"I can't believe I've done that today - it's such an amazing feeling," said the 34-year old from Lichfield, who birdied three of the first six holes en route to a final round 70 . "I was very happy to be playing with Tiger Woods today, and that's a special honour in itself.

"I really surprised myself - early on I was very, very nervous, but hit some good shots and started thinking, 'Why not?'"

His second win as a professional pockets the Englishman €347,024 and moves him up to second in the Race to Dubai, whilst also securing starts in the big-money World Golf Championship Bridgestone Invitational and HSBC Champions events later this year.

"On behalf of everyone at The Belfry, we'd like to congratulate Robert on his stunning victory in Abu Dhabi," said Gary Silcock, Director of Golf at the resort. "He showed complete control and composure on that final day - especially when you consider the Major winners that were hunting him down.

"We look forward to congratulating him in person when he next drops in to practice on The Brabazon course," added Silcock.

Rock's victory carries on the recent success of golf at The Belfry after professional Sam Walker held his nerve during the final event on last season's Challenge Tour to qualify for the European Tour.

Walker's cousin and fellow Belfry professional, Tom Whitehouse, ended last year's Challenge Tour strongly, whilst also recording impressive finishes in several European Tour events, like in the Madeira Islands Open where he finished inside the top ten.
