Mother and son duo crowned champions of Burhill Golf Club's 75th Family Foursomes
September 11, 2012

Mother and son pair Jane and Harry Bathurst were crowned champions of Burhill Golf Club's prestigious Family Foursomes, which this year celebrated its Diamond White anniversary.

The Hankley Common duo claimed victory by defeating the father and daughter team of Andrew and Leonie Baker, from Royal Wimbledon 2&1 in the final of the event, which was first played in 1937.

The inaugural Family Foursomes was won by Capt JRA and Miss Sheila Stroyan over the Old Course, and was billed in the local newspaper as 'Families in Foursomes at Burhill... When A Mother's Love for Bad Son is Worth Many Strokes'.

Three-quarters of a century later and the tournament was held over the same course, now ranked among the top 100 in England.

Jane and 12-year-old Harry, who reached the quarter final stage of last year's event, battled through six knock-out matches to claim their victory.

As a precursor to the main tournament, Jane and Andrew Loakimides claimed the annual Langmead Morgan Trophy, with Jeremy and Stephanie Williams finishing runners-up. The trophy, first played for in 2003, was donated by Juliet Morgan to mark the 50 th anniversary of her first outing in the Family Foursomes.

Pip Elson, Director of Golf at Burhill Golf Club, said: "When club secretary Major Stephens launched this event 75 years ago it struck a chord with the golfers of Surrey, and now the Family Foursomes competition is proving as popular as ever.

"We had glorious weather for this year's event, which was matched by the golf. Congratulations to Jane and her young son Harry, who went some way to improve on their last eight finish in 2011 - I have a feeling they could be challenging for a few years yet."
