Burhill Golf Club helping European Stars to the top of the stats
October 30, 2012

Burhill Golf Club has been helping European Tour stars brush up on their skills and reach the heights in the statistic leaderboards.

Tour players Daniel Gaunt and Jamie Elson have been visiting the Short Game Academy at Burhill Golf Club - part of BGL Golf, the UK's leading golf course owner and operator - to sharpen up their skills and stay at the top of their games.

It has been paying dividends as both find themselves riding high in the short game sections of the European Tour's Genworth Statistics.

Australian Gaunt is in the top five of both the Sand Saves and Putts Per Round, behind such players as Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose.

Gaunt's Sand Save average - defined as a percentage of times that a player takes two strokes or less to complete a hole after visiting a greenside bunker - of 77.3% puts him in fourth place, while his average putts per round of 28.6 sees him in fifth.

Elson - son of Burhill Director of Golf and former European Tour Rookie of the Year, Pip Elson - finds himself in the top 20 in the Putts Per Round average, with 29, seeing him into 18 th place.

"The short game practice facilities at Burhill rival anywhere on Tour," said Elson. "It has made a big difference to my game and improved my stats over the last few years."

The Short Game Academy at Burhill opened in 2009,  features expansive grass tees, three target greens, a chipping green surrounded by bunkers and undulations, a five-bay range building, plus practice putting green.

Gaunt added: "The pitching and bunker areas are first class and allow me to be creative in fine tuning this crucial area of my game."

The Surrey County Golf Union also use Burhill's Short Game Academy to coach its teams as well as the young Tour stars of the future, and also houses the Mizuno National Fitting Centre.

David Cook, Burhill Golf Club General Manager, said: "Since the Short Game Academy opened we have seen a number of top class professionals utilising the facility to sharpen up their short game, lining up in the range bays and the grass tees alongside our members.

"The practice area is the perfect compliment to our two Championship golf courses and first class clubhouse facilities and it is great to see two Tour professionals such as Daniel and Jamie benefitting from it."
