Fiestas honouring Costa Brava region an unmissable event for visiting golfers
November 5, 2012

Golfers visiting Costa Brava this month are invited to join patriotic Catalans in their greatest annual fiesta - the Festival of Saint Narcis, from October 26-November 4.

The 'Fires De Sant Narcis' is a vibrant 10-day festival in honour of Girona's patron Narcís, best know as 'Saint of Flies', commemorating, as folklore dictates, the deadly swarm of flies that burst out of Saint Narcis' tomb and drove away the invading French army, ending the war in 1.285

The festival opens on October 26 in front of the 'Girona Ajuntament' (town hall), with giant motorised figures parading through the town - an exciting spectacle that sets the stage for the ascendance, each year, of a 'human castle' 'walking' up the steps of Girona Cathedral.

Ramon Ramos, Director  of  Costa Brava Girona Tourist Board , said: "'Fires De Sant Narcis' is a great opportunity to experience Catalan culture at its fullest and most vibrant. It is one of the biggest fiestas of the year here in Girona, and we welcome all visitors to join us for the unforgettable celebrations."

At the north end of the city's Parc De La Devesa, on a large open area called La Copa, a stage hosts many different bands on each of the evenings of the 10-day affair. Spectators can also enjoy a variety of hot food and drinks served out of huts, locally referred to as ' Les Barraques', each run by, or donating profits to, local schools.

Visitors can also take part in the numerous street parties and meander through the colourful stalls that line the streets, parks and squares during 'Fires De Sant Narcis', taking in the lively atmosphere of this unique festival.

For those golfers wanting to play close to the festivities, PGA Catalunya Resort, a World Top 100 venue and home to Spain's best course, is a must-play. In addition, Golf Girona, with its wonderfully maintained layout, is a very pleasant course for discerning golfers.

A short 40-minute drive north of Girona, Torremirona Golf Club and Club de Golf Peralada boast outstanding courses that present a good test for players of all standards and which enjoy stunning views over the Pyrenees.

Located an hour north of Barcelona and easily accessible thanks to Girona-Costa Brava Airport - an important Ryanair hub - the region is home to many prestigious golf resorts, cultural and historical attractions, as well as a wide range of comfortable accommodation.
