Celebrate Greek Easter with Costa Navarino
March 27, 2012

The customs, traditions and recipes of Messinia will be revived at Costa Navarino , giving guests a unique chance to taste first-hand the rich cultural heritage of the region. Those visiting The Westin Resort, Costa Navarino during Greek Easter (from Friday 13 th until Monday 16 th of April) will become part of an authentic experience and share with the locals in their Easter celebrations. Both at The Westin Resort as well as in the nearby picturesque villages, the atmosphere created by the revival of Messinian customs is found in abundance, in one of the most beautiful areas of the Mediterranean.

The Agora at Navarino Dunes in Costa Navarino will be the hub of the activities organized especially for the Greek Easter, while guests will also have the chance to discover the destination's vast range of facilities. Visitors can relax in the authentic luxury surroundings of The Westin Resort, and also participate in activities such as the Philosophy Walks (on Easter Monday), guided forays through the idyllic landscape of Costa Navarino that examine philosophical texts through the prism of important current issues.

At the little chapel of St. Sampson at the Agora, visitors can get acquainted with the devout religious proceedings taking place throughout the long weekend. Children can also participate in the specially created program of activities including Easter egg painting and creating and decorating their own fire lanterns for the Resurrection service on Good Saturday. During their stay, a program of multiple entertainment options will introduce these little guests to the region's customs and traditions. On Saturday morning of the Easter weekend, in line with tradition, local women prepare and bake "embroidered breads". The evening's midnight worship will be followed by spectacular fireworks, while the traditional dish of "magiritsa" along with cracking the red-painted eggs, form part of the festive menu. Throughout the celebrations, traditional Messinian Easter recipes will form an essential part of the culinary offering at Navarino Dunes. Alongside the well-known roast lamb on a spit, which is the main Greek dish on Easter Sunday, another special dish called "kleftiko" is prepared on that day. This is done in the same way that the locals have been cooking it for hundreds of years. All the while the weekend's celebrations will be complemented by the region's customs, dances and songs.

The Westin Resort, Costa Navarino is the ideal base to explore Messinia and observe the traditional Greek Easter customs in the surrounding small towns and villages, unfolding a rich cultural heritage. The picturesque chapels spread throughout the area, such as the ones in the villages Gargaliani and Filiatra, create a solemn atmosphere during the religious proceedings. The Epitaph Procession on the evening of Good Friday has been "shared" between the villages of Romanos and Petrohori for many years. Starting at one village and ending in the other, it passes through a country road surrounded by olive groves. A great place to watch this procession is in the town of Pylos and also Koroni, where it follows a path among archaeological sites and the town's landmark, the Venetian castle. For those extending their stay, the first Friday after Easter sees the feast of the Holy Virgin of Eleistria, also in Koroni. This celebration features a procession during which the icon is carried through the town's streets. The spectacular "Saitopolemos" is a competition involving teams holding tubular home-made fireworks (saites). Taking place in Kalamata on either Good Saturday or Easter Sunday, it is a colorful event dating back to the Greek War of Independence. In the small village of Dasohori, the local custom of making and flying of balloons at the church of Aghia Paraskevi is still held these days, as well as many more customs in the Messinian region.
