Golfers flying high in Cumbria
January 31, 2012

Staff from RAF Spadeadam are flying high - out on the golf course.

A group of 16 engineers from the station at Brampton signed up for the Cumbria County Golf Partnership's Get into Golf programme.

The latest scheme targets businesses across the region with the aim of promoting a healthier lifestyle for employees.

Now the RAF workmates - who range from golfing beginners to more regular players - are enjoying a series of six free lessons with PGA professional Stuart Rafferty at Eden Golf Club, near Carlisle.

A RAF Spadeadam spokesman says: "It has been a great way to get together in a sociable way while the newcomers to the sport have really enjoyed themselves.

"Stuart has been a great teacher and everyone is improving while having plenty of good-natured banter.

"This is a good scheme that enables colleagues to spend time together outside the usual work environment while doing something that is fun and healthy."

The group shows that golf is a sport that is accessible to all ages and abilities - with teenagers teeing up alongside those in their 40s.

Eden Golf Club professional Stuart Rafferty adds: "They have all been very good pupils - willing to listen and keen to improve. The more they have learnt about the game, the better they have become and that helps them enjoy the game even more.

"This scheme has been another way to introduce people to the sport, help develop pathways into future lessons or golf club membership and that can only be good for the long-term future of the clubs."

Stuart is keen to hear from other businesses who are interested in what golf has to offer for their staff.

Says Jane Robinson, county development officer for the Cumbria County Golf Partnership: "The Get into Golf scheme aimed at businesses has brought together people from all walks of life to enjoy a taste of what golf has to offer.

"The chance to begin learning the game in the company of friends from work is a great introduction to a sport that offers a healthy lifestyle and good social life as well."

RAF Spadeadam specialises in electronic warfare tactics.

It is the only facility in Europe where aircrews can practice manoeuvres and tactics against a variety of threats and targets that they face in contemporary warfare. The facility attracts aircraft from the RAF, Army, Navy and NATO Forces.

The survival of aircrews over Iraq, Afghanistan or elsewhere, and the soldiers on the ground who depend on air support are affected by the training provided by RAF Spadeadam.

Eden Golf Club, in Crosby-on-Eden, was first established in 1991 and has 27 parkland holes, a 16 bay floodlit driving range and short game practice area. It has been a regular supporter of Get into Golf schemes run by the Cumbria County Golf Partnership.

Further information can be found at www.edengolf.co.uk/

Eden is offering a special coaching deal with vouchers available for four one-hour lessons for just £100 or six lessons for £150, including a free nine-hole playing lesson. Further details available from Stuart Rafferty on 07799 633343. Membership deals are also available.

The Cumbria County Golf Partnership is a collaboration of a number of stakeholders in the sport including England Golf - the organisation formed by the merger of The English Golf Union and The English Women's Golf Association - the PGA, the Golf Foundation and Sport England.

In Cumbria the partnership is supported by the Cumbria Ladies County Golf Association, the Cumbria Union of Golf Clubs, The Eden Valley Sports Partnership and the PGA North East/West.
