Espiche Golf - the Algarve's newest golf course
March 9, 2012

We may only be a few months into 2012, but already there is yet another golf course springing up in Portugal's Algarve. The 39 th golfing spot in the area is Espiche, opened in January, which is making its mark by offering a sustainable place to tee off. The stunning design was developed by South African golf architect Peter Sauerman, who has produced an 18-hole par 72 course with lakes, sprawling woodland and views of the Monchique Mountains. Golf in the Algarve has always been incredibly popular, especially as the Portuguese leg of the Masters is held in Vilamoura, but Espiche is offering something different with its eco-friendly approach.

Espiche's sustainable ethos means that the environment has been considered when creating the layout and managing the course. The natural landscape of the Western Algarve is the main focus, with pine trees, wetlands and hilly terrain presenting a beautiful but challenging place for golfers to enjoy, either as 9 or 18 holes. The whole area has been left as undisturbed as possible, so you can enjoy the real Algarve. This is a course where you can really relax and make the most of the scenery. You're also not far from the natural spa waters of Caldas de Monchique, which have been attracting visitors since Roman times. A top tip if you're bringing the family is to send them to nearby Lagos Zoo, whilst you make the most of your golf time.

So what can you expect from Espiche? The introductory prices are very reasonable, including 18 holes for € 35.00 or 9 holes for € 25.00, with buggy hire starting at € 15.00. This would also be a great place to take the family, as the junior prices for golfers aged 15 and under range from € 15-20. If you're keen to try out a new course then this will certainly tempt you. The only disadvantage is that the Club House is still undergoing development, with only light refreshments currently available, so it might be wise to visit the nearby town of Lagos after you've played. Once the Club House is opened then you will be able to enjoy a 360 degree view of the landscape and laze on the terraces or the patio garden. There will also be a shop and a resort which will provide accommodation, allowing you to be close to the facilities.

Where to find Espiche: take the EN125 and head towards Barao de Sao Joao or Lagos Zoo. On the right hand side there is a turning for Espiche Golf.

Where to stay: the 4 Star Estrela da Luz Hotel in Lagos has a free bus service to local golf courses and to the centre of Lagos. It also offers guests a wine and tapas bar and a health club with spa facilities - great after a long day's golfing.

How to reach the Algarve: The local airport is Faro, which has international arrivals.
