Martin Sell wins again on Jamega Tour
July 5, 2012

The Jamega Pro Golf Tour returned to Studley Wood Golf Club in Oxfordshire on Monday 2 and Tuesday 3 May. Martin Sell from Wrag Barn Golf Club claimed his second victory on the course this year over the field of professional tour players entered to play the 36 hole tournament.

The recent break in the wet weather was short lived as challenging conditions returned with wind sweeping across the course driving the rain horizontally into the players.

First back on day one with the score to beat was Nick Lawrence. After finishing a solid front nine with an eagle, the back nine proved slightly tougher for the South African born player, with cross winds to contend with on a few of the holes. Lawrence still managed to return to the clubhouse with a 3 under score of 70. The tricky conditions meant that day one was never going to be a low scoring day. The only other players to challenge Lawrence's score, one shot behind, were Martin Sell, Joe Ferguson from Celtic Manor and Benjamin Martin.

The conditions improved slightly but remained testing for the second, and final, day of play. Ryan Harrison from Bramley Golf Club played a skilful round completing a flawless front nine with an eagle, then only dropping one shot on the twelfth and finishing with a final birdie to card 5 under for the day and level par for the tournament. Stuart Runcie from Abergele Golf Club had a brilliant back to back eagle finish after a steady start, ending his tournament 1 under par to tie for sixth position with Joe Ferguson. After a slow start Joe Smoothy eventually found his form carding 5 birdies on the back nine to secure third position with a tournament score of 3 under. Nick Lawrence produced another steady round picking up a further two shots to finish 5 under and in second position.

It was Martin Sell who stepped up to the mark and showed his class with an almost error free round. Quickly putting a bogey on the first behind him, he maintained his focus and carried on to post seven birdies, which, given the conditions, was an outstanding round of golf. "I set myself a target, tried to stay patient as it was a bit blustery and tried to hit as many greens as I can." commented Sell after he had handed in his winning card. "It was a good round, I played solid and kept it under control."

Sell, who won the Jamega Pro Golf Tour Winter Series at Studley Wood, is planning to continue playing in the Jamega tournaments for the remainder of the season alongside Europro, with the European Tour Qualifying School being the main focus for the end of the year.

The Jamega Pro Golf Tour has held tournaments at Studley Wood Golf Club since 2007 and always look forward to returning to the course with its U.S. Open style "Whistling Straits" rough framing the manicured fairways that led the players to the usual perfect putting surfaces. Studley Wood has a lot to offer event organisers, Olympians Mark Foster and Steve Cram have both held charity golf days at the club earlier this year.

Studley Wood also has an excellent junior academy programme for golfing stars of the future. There are around 55 junior players from beginners to County Team members, who attend regular coaching and playing sessions through the year.

The next Jamega Pro Golf event on the tour schedule will be held in Hertfordshire on 7 & 8 July at The Shire London on the only Seve Ballesteros designed course in the UK.
