Leeds Golf Centre shares Open Championship technology
July 25, 2012

FlightScope - the premier portable indoor-outdoor ball-flight and launch monitor - dominated for the second year running at this weekend's Open Championship, some 12 months after first being installed at Leeds Golf Centre's impressive Academy.

Screen shots utilising information from FlightScope's world-beating X2 system were broadcast by the BBC in relation to the 16 th hole and f our additional X2's were sited on the official practice ground for use by players and their coaches. Connected wirelessly via iPad, the real-time system output data was used to fine-tune swings and hone required ball flight characteristics by some of the planet's best players ahead of tournament play.

In addition, the X2 was also implemented in conjunction with HSBC, Official Patron of The Open Championship, to enhance an interactive experience at The HSBC Golf Zone. As players used the systems on the practice range, detailed performance data was transmitted to the HSBC Golf Zone and displayed to members of the public on a 50-inch screen; the same members of the public were then invited to sample the FlightScope X2 for themselves in a number of indoor simulators.

FlightScope's excellent software allows golfers to access and benchmark their golf games indoors and outdoors using a set of virtual targets. Detailed information is available on swing parameters including club-head speed and impact angle as well as ball-flight data on spin-rate and trajectory.

Of course, this information is also vitally important when FlightScope is used in a commercial installation such as at Leeds Golf Centre's excellent Academy. Six qualified teaching professionals use the system to help analyse a pupil's golfing credentials and give constructive feedback during lessons - plus the system also comes into its own during custom club-fittings and assessments. Furthermore, the system can also be used in conjunction with golf course simulator packages to offer 'virtual' indoor golf on courses around the world and this too is available at the impressively remodelled North Leeds facility.

Head Professional and Academy Manager at Leeds Golf Centre, Andy Herridge, commented: "The addition of FlightScope to our suite of teaching aids was a fantastic step forwards for us last year - our professionals and their clients love it. Knowing that this technology is still good enough for the world's best broadcaster at the world's biggest golf tournament is certainly reassuring and we look forwards to putting it to further good use throughout the remainder of this year and beyond.
