PGA Catalunya Resort to host RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship
June 6, 2012

PGA Catalunya Resort  near Barcelona has announced it will host the only RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship (WLDC) to be staged in Europe this year on September 8.

Spain's No.1 golf course has teamed up with Gerard Pera, the first Spaniard to ever compete in the World Long Drive Championship, to bring the premier event in power golf to the two-time Spanish Open venue.

Miguel Girbes, Golf Director at PGA Catalunya Resort, commented: "Our venue is the perfect setting for golf's longest hitters to come together and compete for a place* in the RE/MAX WLDC finals in Las Vegas later this year, where the prize is a cool $500,000.

"With rewards for the first four places up for grabs, we are expecting a true showdown between the biggest hitters in Europe, and look forward to welcoming professional players and amateurs alike. With each contestant having six tries to hit the ball as far as possible in just two minutes and 45 seconds, we anticipate a nail-biting event and a true test of strength - both mental and physical."

The RE/MAX WLDC-PGA Catalunya Resort will be played over a 54x400m field and split into four categories - professional, amateur male, amateur female, and seniors.

On the day, contestants will be tested in their respective qualifying groups, with each golfer hitting six drives per entry, with their longest shot determining whether they proceed to the final day's action. The knock-out rounds then have a 'double elimination' format that allows all players at least two opportunities to progress further before final elimination.

"The RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship is not about finesse and style - it is the most spectacular golf power show you will ever witness. The emphasis is not only on how far a ball can be driven but also how skilful and accurate contestants can be," added Miguel Girbes.

As a build up for the big day, Gerard Pera, current world number 15 and RE/MAX WLDC European rookie of the year 2011, will be holding a demonstration with members of the press at PGA Catalunya Resort on June 19, 2012, offering tips on how to drive the ball as far as possible to have the best chance of winning on the day.

Entry fee per amateur will be €50 and €60 per professional. Prize money for the four first placed pro players will be: €500 for fourth place, €1500 for third, €2000 for second and first place receives - as well as a place in the final in Las Vegas - €3000. Amateur and senior winner prizes will be courtesy of Callaway and will include the latest Callaway RAZR Fit Driver.

The RE/MAX WLDC-PGA Catalunya Resort will be held in association with Coca Cola, Confortel Hoteles, Callaway, Caves Mestres, Radio Flaixbac, Air Europa and Vichy Catalan.

* Only applicable to Spanish professionals.
