World Long Drive Championship participants can qualify for world final
June 22, 2012

PGA Catalunya Resort  near Barcelona, co-organiser and host of this year's only European RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship (WLDC) on September 8, has announced all participants will now be eligible to compete for a place at the World grand finale in Las Vegas, where more than $500,000 is up for grabs.

Previously restricted to Spanish participants only, the sought-after place is now open to competitors from around the world, following an announcement made during PGA Catalunya Resort's Long Drive demonstration hosted by Gerard Pera, Spain's first competitor in the World Long Drive Championship (WLDC) - also attended by former FC Barcelona player turned sports commentator, Gerard Lopez.

During the demonstration, attended by members of the press and potential contenders, Gerard showcased the skills and techniques required for long driving, highlighting the fitness and accuracy required to compete on the specially constructed 54-metre by 400-metre field.

Miguel Girbes, Golf Director at PGA Catalunya Resort, commented: "It is a privilege to work with Gerard Pera and organise the most spectacular golf power show in the world. Being in his company and seeing him hit those balls so far was inspirational - and the perfect catalyst to the upcoming Championship in September.

"The demonstration wowed the audience and showcased the mental and physical skills required to compete. You definitely need strength, power and accuracy if you want to be in with a chance of winning - and trust me, it's easier said than done!"

Professional players and amateurs will be able to compete in the tournament's four categories - professional, amateur male, amateur female, and seniors - with a chance to win one of the RE/MAX WLDC-PGA Catalunya Resort prizes on offer.

Cash prizes for the four first placed pro players will be: €500 for fourth place, €1500 for third, €2000 for second and first place receives - as well as a place in the final in Las Vegas - €3000. Amateur and senior winner prizes will be courtesy of Callaway and will include the latest Callaway RAZR Fit Driver.

Miguel continued: "We are very much looking forward to welcoming this year's contenders to Spain's number one course and are excited about brining RE/MAX WLDC back to Europe and - for the first time - to Spain."

The RE/MAX WLDC-PGA Catalunya Resort will be staged in association with: Air Europa, Coca Cola, Confortel Hoteles, Callaway, Caves Mestres, Ràdio Flaixbac, Vichy Catalan, Munich, Mundo Deportivo, RCD Espanyol and Green Square.

Entry fees will be €50 for amateurs, €60 for Spanish professionals and €80 for international professional.  For more information about the event visit
