Dan Konyk crowned Long Drive King
September 18, 2012

British big-hitter Dan Konyk has overpowered the global field at  PGA Catalunya Resort , near Barcelona, to win 2012's only European RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship (WLDC).

Competing in the Spanish sun for a prize of €3,000 and a place in the Grand Final in Las Vegas, Konyk, known as 'The Ukrainian', blasted a drive of 417-yards in the semi-final, the longest hit of the day, to pit himself against Swedish sensation Jorgen Trank in the final.

Tussling for top-spot at the Number One golf course in Spain, the global field included home grown talent, such as Gerrard Pera, the first Spaniard to take part in a World Long Drive Championship and 2011 European Rookie of the Year, as well as competitors from Finland, Switzerland, the Netherlands, USA, France and the UK, including 2010 World Champion Joe Miller, who came third.

Following his triumph, Konyk said: "With the climate, the hospitality, the organisation and the crowd, PGA Catalunya Resort is one of the best venues I've been to for such a high-profile tournament - it's as good as Vegas.

"I can guarantee that if the event returned next week, let alone next year, the number of competitors would double and PGA Catalunya Resort would see itself hosting yet another international event."

As Konyk had booked his place in the Grand Final before the event, the place in Las Vegas was awarded to Trank who said: "This has been the best event in Europe that I've ever taken part in. I'm looking forward to a grudge match with Dan in Nevada though."

Miguel Girbes, Director of Golf at PGA Catalunya Resort and match referee for the special event, said: "Hosting the only World Long Drive Championship in Europe this year has been a privilege, especially as the event has been extremely well attended.

"I would like to thank everyone involved in the staging of the event including Gerrard Pera, the event sponsors and the PGA Catalunya Resort staff, who have been eagerly anticipating the tournament."

The amateur competition saw participants from Spain, Andorra and the UK take to the stage, with Juan Pagan from Madrid topping the leaderboard ahead of Axel Zunzarren and Pablo Jaureizar, who finished second and third respectively.

The RE/MAX WLDC-PGA Catalunya Resort was staged in association with: M2 Grup, Estrella Damm, Bushnell Golf, Canal+ Golf, 5Hours Energy, Air Europa, CocaCola, Fondesal, BCN Limpieza, Confortel Hoteles, Callaway, Caves Mestres, UVE 2003, Ràdio Flaixbac, Vichy Catalan, Munich, Mundo Deportivo, RCD Espanyol, Green Square, Samsung, Nordic Mist, BP, Oro Cash, 4 Yourbrand, Blonda and Skoda.
