Macmillan’s Longest Day of Golf tees off on UK’s longest course
June 7, 2012

Rockliffe Hall in Hurworth, near Darlington, will play host to a major charity golf challenge later this month to help a team from the region raise thousands of pounds for Macmillan Cancer Support.

On June 21st , the longest day of the year, the four-man team will take part in the 'Longest Day Golf Challenge'. Dubbed as the 'toughest battle in golf', the challenge sees teams tackle 72 holes of golf, 300 shots and a 20 mile walk around the course all in one day.

Teams from across the country take part at different courses and last year raised almost £400,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support which provides practical, medical and financial support for people in the UK affected by cancer.

The team playing Rockliffe Hall's golf course, the longest and most challenging in the UK, is made up of Chris Payne- originally from Middlesbrough- who has a handicap of three and currently plays at Skipton Golf Club, Adam Dickinson from Darlington who has a handicap of 16 and Steve and Craig Owens, both with a handicap of twenty two.

Chris Payne, also a fundraiser for Macmillan Cancer Support, said: "This really is the toughest battle in golf- it requires a lot of mental concentration, physical activity and team spirit. However, it's always great fun but, more importantly, is a novel way of raising money for this crucially important cause. We're really excited by the prospect of playing Rockliffe Hall's course as it is one of the best in Europe but we know it'll be a huge challenge!"

Ian Knight, director of golf at Rockliffe Hall, added: "This really is an impressive challenge that the team has set themselves. Seventy two holes in one day is going to be hard work but I'm sure they'll be hugely encouraged knowing they're raising much needed funds for a great cause. We're delighted that they chose Rockliffe Hall as their course and wish them the best of luck."
