Lumine GC crowns McGuire & Swinburne PGA of Europe Champions
February 27, 2012

With ambitious plans to become one of Europe’s most exciting new golf and leisure developments, Lumine Golf Club has begun the year in impressive style as host venue and key partner of the prestigious PGAs of Europe Fourball Championship, underlining Lumine’s credentials as an up-and-coming championship destination.

Following two days of hotly-contested competition, leading professionals from over eighteen European nations were unanimous in their praise for quality of the resort, where English duo Matt McGuire and Craig Swinburn emerged victorious at the world-class 45-hole facility, just south of Barcelona.

“Golf was the first fully functional amenity available here at Lumine and is central to our plans moving forward. With a host of other openings and amenities set to be unveiled throughout 2012, we are 100% focussed on becoming one of the most comprehensive and desirable leisure facilities on the continent,” commented Calle Carlsson, General Manager. “This event is part of a long-term strategy that involves welcoming key influencers to experience Lumine, with an ultimate aim of letting consumers know that there is something very special happening in the Costa Dorada region.”

The tournament was played over the stunning Lakes Course, designed by golfing legend Greg Norman. Blessed with an additional 27-holes on site, Lumine has already agreed to host the event in 2013 and has signalled its intentions to double the size of the field from 60 pairs to 120, in order to also incorporate the resort’s challenging Hills Course into the tournament.

“The event was a great success and we want to build on it and our relationship with PGAs of Europe to help promote the region as a golfing destination. We’re blessed with two very different but challenging courses and we’d like competitors to experience them both,” continued Carlsson.

Under the management of Troon, the leader in upscale golf course management, development and marketing, Lumine Golf Club [known as PortAventura under the old management - Ed.] has embraced several institutions and federations both domestically and internationally, such as the PGAs of Europe, as it makes significant moves to ensure its success on an international stage. It has identified these partnerships as the key to developing the game amongst local populations as well as foreign visitors.

Ian Randell, Chief Executive of PGAs of Europe, was clearly impressed by the resort. “Everything has been first class, especially the facility and the hospitality. We hope this is the start of a long partnership between the PGAs of Europe, the Costa Dorada Region and Lumine Golf Club.”

Many of the players also commented on the quality of the Troon-managed facility, identifying it as the ideal location to begin their golfing season. “Playing a tournament like this in such good conditions a couple of months before the season starts is great preparation," commented PGAs of Europe Fourball Champion, Craig Swinburn. "The course was in brilliant condition and the hospitality superb.”

Lumine Mediterránea Beach & Golf Community is a first class resort located in the heart of Costa Dorada (Tarragona), at Playa Larga, Salou. The area consists of the golf courses (Lumine Golf Club), the restaurant areas (restaurant Lumine and restaurant Hoyo 19) and the Beach Club, an exclusive area to relax and enjoy.

Lumine Golf Club has 170 acres, which includes three golf courses. The Greg Norman designed Lakes Course, located between beautiful wetlands, with native flora and fauna, is a real challenge for the players. On the other side there is the Hills Course, also called the Course of Sensations, which is situated between rolling hills, surrounded by pine trees and overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. And finally, the Ruins Course, a 9-hole course, characterised by its location between amazing archeological Roman ruins. The facilities offered by Lumine Golf Club include the Golf School and the Pro Shop.

The restaurant area consists of two restaurants: Lumine Restaurant; boasting creative cuisine on the sea shore where the dishes offer exquisite textures, aromas and flavors, and the Hoyo 19 restaurant, which offers a daily menu in a privileged position. There is also a Snack Bar, the perfect place to enjoy an appetizer. The Lumine restaurant won the award for the best restaurant of 2008 given by the Association for Gourmets of Tarragona and the prize for the best restaurant 2009 by the Gastronomic Guild of Costa Dorada. The Beach Club offers everything you require to enjoy a stay in a stunning natural environment.

The complex fulfills all environmental criteria for responsible water management and conservation of fauna and flora. As a result Lumine Golf Club was the first course in Spain to be awarded the “Gold Signature Certificate Sanctuary” by Audubon International.
