NikeRookie Tour prizegiving at Pine Ridge Golf Club
November 20, 2012

Well over 250 people attended a prizegiving at Pine Ridge Golf Club recently to celebrate another outstanding season for Surrey's NikeGolf Rookie Tour.
Founded in 2007, this year was the best season so far for the Rookie Tour.  200 youngsters, with the youngest a mere 5 years old, took part.  They represented 55 Surrey clubs and played 11 events leading to the end of season finale, the 'Race to the Stars' event at Effingham Golf Club. The average number of entries this year has been 100 players per event, with the highest entry being at Goal Farm with 122 boys and girls taking part. Also, the NikeGolf Rookie Tour continues to develop and evolve.  This year the Birdie Trophy was introduced, donated by Junior Committee member Peter Barratt, which was won by an under 12, Daniel Sarson.
In addition to the Rookie Tour there is a series of events for players in the Young Improvers Group (YIGs) for Under 13 boys and girls with club handicaps of 37-54 or no handicap at all.  The number of children playing in this doubled in 2012, as did the number of girls competing in the Under 14 events, a success story for the tour.
At Pine Ridge the review of 2012 was followed by an interview with a true Surrey junior star, Liam Cox.  Liam has captained Surrey junior teams, won Under 12, Under 14 and Under 15 junior county championships and represented England and England schools, a true inspiration to those collecting prizes.  Liam, who has just taken up an offer to attend the University of Notre Dame in America was presented with a beautiful inscribed glass memento from head Surrey coach John Noble.
In total 220 prizes were presented, culminating in the five 2012 Order of Merit winners.  These were:
Aadam Syed                                 Under 12 boys scratch
Tom Maddock                               Under 12 boys handicap
Caridad Senderos                          Under 14 girls handicap
James Olrog                                 Under 14 boys handicap
Finally, Scott Murray collected the Under 14 boys scratch trophy and gave an excellent speech on behalf of the youngsters.
Details of the 2013 NikeGolf RookieTour season can be found on the website.
There can be no doubt the NikeGolf Rookie Tour, run by the Surrey Golf Union is a great success and is very likely to be the largest junior golf tour of its kind in the UK if not Europe.
