The tournament itself, which will become an annual event, will take place on Sunday 19 th August 2012 at Rockliffe Hall, home to the UK's longest golf course.

The scratch competition for category 1 golfers will adopt the format of a professional tour event with first tee announcements, ball spotters and up-to-the-minute live scoring.

Golfers from as far afield as Leeds, York and Silloth on Solway have registered to take part in the competition and prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place.

Speaking about the popularity of the Northern Golf Masters, director of golf at Rockliffe Hall Ian Knight, said: "There was a real appetite for this type of amateur competition in the North East and North Yorkshire and we had hundreds of people wanting to enter. It's popularity has also attracted some big name sponsors too as it's a great chance to showcase your brand and gain media coverage as we've already had a lot of interest from regional and national newspapers, magazines, TV, radio and websites."
