Stocks Golf Club unveils new clubhouse designed by Adam Architecture
September 4, 2012

After a complex 5 year process, Hugh Petter of ADAM Architecture has successfully navigated through local planning laws to complete the construction of a new golf clubhouse for the Stocks course in Aldbury, Hertfordshire.

The 18-hole golf course that the new clubhouse serves was designed by M Billcliffe and opened in 1993.  The course is of championship quality, offering challenging and rewarding golf at every level.  The golf course venue has hosted various events including Professional and Amateur County Championships, PGS qualifying and four prestigious Pro Am competitions.

Located within the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), the new clubhouse is a 6,570 sq ft single storey building, with a small basement for service accommodation below ground level.  The distinctive character of agricultural buildings in the Chilterns with dark stained weather-boarded walls and a clay tile roof has been combined with simple painted timber classical details in a manner reminiscent of the great architect, Lutyens, whose wife's family came from Hertfordshire.

The local planning inspector for the scheme commented that the building proposal was "of a design and scale of a high quality, appropriate to its rural location".

The building is 'H' shaped in plan, at the heart of which is the club room bar.  The 7,115 sq ft green keepers' facility has been modeled to resemble a traditional assembly of vernacular agricultural buildings that complement the club house whilst providing the most efficient use of internal space.

Special features of the building include:

•  Gentlemen's and Ladies' changing rooms, including bespoke oak lockers, shower and toilet facilities

•  Club Secretary's administration office with views over the golf course

•  Desktop competition/score entry terminal

•  Bespoke, oak trophy cabinet

•  Bar area with bespoke oak fittings and three sets of double doors

•  Dining facility with views over the golf course and surrounding countryside

•  Kitchen facilities, basement storage, plant room and staff facilities

•  Green Keepers' accommodation including buggy compound, workshop area, fertiliser store and plant area

•  Staff showers, toilets and mess room

•  Head Green Keeper's office, drying room, plant room and hand tool store

Hugh Petter, Design Director at ADAM Architecture said, "The new club building at Stocks is, I believe, an attractive and appropriate addition to this fine course in a sensitive and beautiful landscape setting."
