Young golfers emulate Ryder Cup stars at Wycombe Heights Golf Centre
November 20, 2012

Junior golfers at Wycombe Heights Golf Centre were given the chance to emulate their Ryder Cup heroes when the venue staged its own version of the famous match between Europe and the United States.

Twenty young golf stars aged between four and 14 from in and around High Wycombe took part in the event at the public pay-and-play facility - part of BGL Golf, the UK's leading golf course owner and operator - which saw the group split into two teams to contest a match using the same team matchplay format as the Ryder Cup.

Captained by two of Wycombe Heights's expert PGA Professionals, Richard Perkin and Scott Sellars, the teams battled over three days, playing fourballs on the first day, foursomes on day two with the match concluding with singles on the final day.

Played over the centre's Par-3 Course - designed by two-time European Ryder Cup captain John Jacobs - it was the European team skippered by Perkin who proved victorious with a 10.5 - 7.5 win.

Prior to each day's matches the children where coached by the two PGA Professionals in every aspect of golf including the fundamentals of the game, rules, etiquette and safety.

Graham Rolland, Wycombe Heights Golf Centre General Manager, said: "Just like the real Ryder Cup, our junior version witnessed great golf and exciting matches. All the children, no matter their age or ability, had an enjoyable week, each day putting into practice the skills they had learnt from Richard and Scott.

"It is not often that junior golfers get to experience the team matchplay format that makes the Ryder Cup so exciting and our Pros did a tremendous job with the youngsters, teaching them new skills on the driving range and short game practice area, before heading out onto the Par-3 Course - which is the perfect place for children and beginners to enjoy a round."
