Adam Scott the new Master but belly putter ban could halt progress

April 15, 2013

Adam Scott became the first Australian to win the US Masters in dramatic style on Sunday night and bookmaker Paddy Power have it tipped to be the first of many Majors. The golfer, who beat Argentine Angel Cabrera in playoff to take the green jacket, is at odds of 20/1 to win the 2013 US Open - the next Major this year.

After he let last year's British Open slip from his grasp on the final day Scott is 5/1 to pick up two Major titles this year, 16/1 to pick up three and 200/1 to become only the 6th man ever to achieve the Grand Slam. Given his excellent recent record of two second places and one win in the last nine Majors bookmaker Paddy Power is giving odds of 5/4 that he'll win between 2-3 Major titles in his career, odds of 7/2 that he'll win between 4-5, and odds of 9/2 that he'll win six or more Majors.

Although Scott's win has been met with universal praise it has also once again raised the controversy surrounding belly putters. Many pundits say that the Australian's game has been transformed since using the anchoring technique and his win at the Masters means all four Majors have now been won in the last few years by players using that style of putting.

The USGA and R&A want belly putters banned and Paddy Power are giving odds of 5/2 that they will be outlawed in time for the 2016 Masters. Scott, along with many others, is seen to have hugely benefited from using belly putters so Paddy Power have odds of 8/1 that if they are banned then he will not win another Major.

A Paddy Power spokesman said; "We were delighted to see Scotty put his 2012 heartbreak behind him and become the first Australian wear the world's most famous green jacket. We think this might be the start of many Major victories for him but if the powers that be ban anchoring then it could all go belly up!"
