More majors on the cards before belly putter ban kicks in

May 23, 2013

With the last four major titles from six won by players using the anchoring method bookmaker Paddy Power is predicting further wins ahead of an upcoming ban. The bookmaker is giving odds of 7/4 that there will be 2 or 3 majors won by anchoring before 2016.

After a long period of consultation the R&A and US Golf Association have decided to ban anchoring which will forbid the usage of belly putters - like the one used by Adam Scott to win the Masters last month. Scott is said to have benefitted hugely from implementing the anchoring technique but Paddy Power have him at odds of 2/5 to win a major with a non-anchored putter.

The PGA Tour will now decide whether to follow suit and their final call could be crucial to whether the technique will disappear entirely. Paddy Power is giving odds of 2/1 that there will be no more majors won with an anchored putter. However, given the recent success of players using the technique, and with Adam Scott having grabbed the seasons first major using one, Paddy Power are giving odds of 80/1 that every major this year will be won by a player using an anchored putter - the belly slam!

This week sees the return of the BMW PGA Championship and Paddy Power are paying six places on the tournament starting Thursday. Luke Donald is the favourite at 8/1. Rory McIlroy is second favourite at 11/1 alongside Justin Rose and Lee Westwood at the same odds. Fried chicken fan Sergio Garcia is at 16/1 to win whilst Graeme McDowell, the form player going into this tournament, is at 20/1.

A Paddy Power spokesman said; "The anchoring ban will level the playing field after several grumpy players said it was basically cheating. Tiger was one of the loudest moaners about belly putters being used, nothing to do with him having not won a major in five years we’re sure."
