Paddy Power offering belly putter odds

July 3, 2013

To avoid confusing golfers across the world the PGA have approved the proposed ban on belly putters meaning the anchoring technique will disappear from January 2016. However, Paddy Power have the odds on the British Open being scooped by a man wielding a belly putter at just 11/2.

At the end of 2012 the R&A alongside the USGA proposed banning the controversial putting technique. The PGA didn't initially support the proposal and a potential split looked to be forming across the major governing bodies, however they've now aligned themselves with the European Tour and will implement the ban.

Four of the last seven major winners have used the anchoring technique and Paddy Power give odds of 6/1 that there will be three or more majors won between now and January 2016 by players employing the technique. The odds on two majors being won by players using the anchoring technique are 5/2 , 13/8 on one major , and 2/1 on zero major titles being lifted by players using belly putters.

Adam Scott triumphed at Augusta this year using a belly putter and is 20/1 to win the British Open. Other belly putter major winners include Ernie Els, who is 25/1 to win the Open , Webb Simpson, who is 66/1 to win at Muirfield , and Keegan Bradley who is also 66/1 to win the Championship .

Despite a poor showing at the US Open and a problematic elbow Tiger Woods is favourite for the 2013 British Open at odds of 8/1 followed by the winner from Merion Justin Rose at 16/1 . Rory McIlroy is 20/1 to get his season back on track with a win up in Scotland.

A Paddy Power spokesman said; "The powers that be in golf have come together to ban the anchoring technique but we don't think that will stop players using it to win majors between now and January 2016. Scotty and Ernie are both definitely in the running to belly their way to the front of the field at Muirfield."
