Have the New Big Bertha's Given Callaway the Edge?

December 23, 2013

In the golfing world we are constantly bombarded by new products that offer us the latest in features and technology, promising to bring miraculous results to our golf game. But when was the last time we were privy to an actual first? Enter the unveiling of Callaway's new line of Big Bertha drivers.

With the top brands working tirelessly to introduce new and improved equipment year after year, it can easily become an overwhelming task to keep up. Recently, it has been TaylorMade that has dominated the driver scene. From the R1 to the SLDR, TaylorMade has been at the forefront of driver design over the past decade. But has Callaway finally been able to usurp them?

Earlier this month Callaway announced its new line of Big Bertha Drivers, the Big Bertha and the Big Bertha Alpha. The buzz was immediate and swift. Twitter feeds blew up and golfers around the globe got excited. The two models, available from February 2014, boast Callaway's first-ever adjustable perimeter weighting technology and work to control gravity, maximise distance and increase ball speed.

The new Big Bertha is being billed by the brand as the Total Performance Driver, suitable for all golfers regardless of ability. The driver's adjustable perimeter weight is an 8g sliding weight positioned inside a track that can be moved along the rear and side of the club head to assist in shot shape and control. Featuring Callaway's Hyper Speed Face, it offers players a higher MOI design to help maintain maximum ball speed.

Callaway's head of research and development, Dr. Alan Hocknell explains,

"It has the ability to enhance the sweet spot. If you're an average golfer the chances are you're not going to hit the center of the face all that often. So we're designing this face, obviously to be very high speed in the center of the face, but in those areas away from the center of the face we also want really high ball speed."

The Big Bertha Alpha features an innovation never before seen with its Gravity Core. This carbon tube sits inside the club head, connecting the crown and sole. It can be inserted in one of two ways, giving players the opportunity to change the vertical center of gravity within the club head. For the first time ever, allowing you to reduce spin without having to reduce loft.

Boasting four independent forms of adjustability, the Big Bertha Alpha represents the ultimate in customisation. And according to Hocknell is the "most flexible fitting platform ever devised."

With amazing buzz and support from big name players like Phil Mickelson and Annika Sorenstam, Callaway looks poised to make 2014 a strong and game-changing year, steeped in history while decisively embracing the future. The Big Bertha and the Big Bertha Alpha will be available from February 14, 2014 on a variety of online stores including GolfOnline.
