Welsh golfer makes history after being fitted for Bridgestone ball

August 14, 2013

Two days after being fitted for a new Bridgestone golf ball, Welshman David Duckworth made history at the Royal Town Caernarfon Golf Club in Gwynedd, North Wales, when he became the first man in 30 years to break the net-60 barrier to win the Club Handicap Championship.

Duckworth - a 13-handicap golfer who works as a bar man at the club - used the new e6 golf ball after being fitted by Bridgestone's chief technician, helping him record a life-time-best gross score of 72 to take top honours. His round, which included five birdies, was, according to Caernarfon Golf Club officials, the first time anyone has posted a net score of lower than 60 on the Championship golf course in more than 30 years.

"I'm delighted with the way I played, but there's no doubt the decision to change to the ball I was measured for by Bridgestone played a big part in my success," said 58-year-old Duckworth, who plans to carry on playing the e6 ball that is designed for players with a swing speed of less than 105 mph. "I was driving the ball about 25 yards further than normal and straighter, so it's definitely something I would recommend to other golfers - but thankfully I didn't do that before the club championships!"

Caernarfon Golf Club's PGA Professional Aled Owen was also very impressed with the sub-60 performance. "I keep telling David he owes me one as I told him about the ball-fitting opportunity, but on a serious note I'm really pleased for him," said Owen. "We'll be staging another Bridgestone ball fitting session next year because it proved very popular with our members, who want to lower their scores like David has."

The Bridgestone Golf Ball Fitting Challenge aims to analyse golfers' swing speed, launch angle and spin rates to determine the ball that delivers the most distance and accuracy for them as an individual. Bridgestone Golf doubled its schedule of ball fitting challenges this year across the UK & Ireland, while it has conducted more than 222,000 worldwide.
