Controversial putters set to dominate in 2013?

February 26, 2013

This Thursday golf's governing bodies will convene to rule on whether to limit the use of belly and broom-handle putters, a controversial proposal that could lead to a worldwide ban in 2016. After triumphs by players using the putters last year bookmaker Paddy Power is giving odds of 6/1 that the 2013 Masters will be won by a player using a belly or broom-handle putter.

Ernie Els and Webb Simpson both won majors last year using the anchoring method and Paddy Power have also given odds of 250/1 on the "Belly Slam" - all four majors in 2013 being won by a player who is using a belly or broom-handle putter.

Debate around banning the technique has created a split amongst players as well as between the PGA Tour, who this week claimed there was no overriding reason to support the ban, and golf's governing bodies. The divisive nature of the proposal has carried over into the odds on the ban being implemented with Paddy Power giving odds of 1/3 that there will be no ban on the belly and broom-handle putters and odds of 2/1 that there will be a ban from 2016 .

A Paddy Power spokesman said; "Whatever the result of Thursday's ruling we think the belly putter issue is going to rumble on for some time. Given the success of the technique last year we're giving odds on the very first Belly Slam - not to be confused with odds on Tiger wrestling with Rory on the 18 th at Augusta."
