Costa Brava - Home to Spain’s Best Golf Course and now the Best Restaurant

May 8, 2013

The Costa Brava region of Spain has reinforced its reputation as a global culinary capital with the announcement that El Celler de Can Roca in Girona has been named the World's Best Restaurant (2013) by the prestigious Restaurant Magazine.

The family-run favourite, managed by three brothers, follows in the footsteps of many distinguished restaurants in the region that have dominated the world rankings - most notably El Bulli, which occupied the No.1 position from 2006 to 2009, before closing in 2011 to enable its world famous chef, Ferran Adrià, to pursue other interests.

With its three Michelin stars, El Celler de Can Roca entered the World's 50 Best list eight years ago and has steadily climbed the rankings ever since. Its relatively low-key rise is reflective of the Roca brothers' evolutionary approach and modest outlook.

Ramón Ramos, Director of Costa Brava Girona Tourist Board, commented: "For Costa Brava to be home to the No.1 restaurant in the world once again is testament to the region's quality of cuisine and gastronomic heritage.

"Having celebrated another No.1 ranking only a few months ago - with PGA Catalunya Resort being named Spain's best golf course* - this new accolade reaffirms the quality of the destination and demonstrates exactly why lovers of both world-class cuisine and golf should come to Costa Brava."

The region is home to the highest concentration of Michelin-starred restaurants - 20 within 5.9 square kilometres - and many prestigious golf resorts offering high quality accommodation.

Golfers therefore looking to enhance their breaks by combining a visit to El Celler de Can Roca, or any of the region's fine dining restaurants, with great golf experiences, should consider:

With the newly opened high-speed train (AEV) line, Girona is just 37 minutes from Barcelona and easily accessible thanks to Girona-Costa Brava Airport, an important Ryanair hub.
