Ludwell lifts golf’s oldest professional trophy at De Vere Oulton Hall

August 30, 2013

De Vere Oulton Hall once again welcomed the oldest trophy in professional golf, as it hosted leading talent from the PGA North Region for the De Vere Leeds Cup. Nick Ludwell of Selby Golf Club posted a stunning seven-under par two-round total to fight off the competition and claim a two stroke victory in the prestigious tournament, which has been a highlight of the PGA calendar since its inception in 1902. Ludwell followed up his impressive opening round of 66 with a 69 to claim the famous trophy over the championship course at Oulton Hall.

The stunning Leeds resort has hosted the tournament for the last three years, after returning to the venue in 2010 and provides the perfect setting to the prestigious event, amongst the Yorkshire countryside. The par-71 championship course was presented in pristine condition, following a thorough programme of maintenance and drainage works throughout the winter to ensure that the course is in the best possible condition, all year round. The challenge posed by the championship course was underlined by only 15 of the 132 players finishing under par for the two rounds, but with multiple teeing options the course is suitable for players of all ability.

Keith Pickard, Regional Golf Director, De Vere, commented "We are proud to have hosted this prestigious event, as it is held in such high regard within the professional game because of its history. To welcome these leading players for three consecutive years is testament to the quality of the resort and the high standards of the golf course, which has been fantastically prepared by the excellent team of greens staff here at Oulton. Congratulations to Nick on his impressive victory, and as a local pro I'm sure he has always wanted to get his hands on this trophy."

Graham Maly, Secretary of the PGA in England and Wales (North), noted, "Being the oldest trophy in professional golf, the Leeds Cup is recognised as the most prestigious event that we organise in the PGA North Region. We have always looked to ensure that the Leeds Cup is played at the best possible venue and De Vere Oulton Hall certainly provides that. The golf course is always in great condition and we are always sure to crown a worthy winner. We have a strong relationship with De Vere both through our national and regional PGA events held across their portfolio of resorts, including the ISPS HANDA PGA Seniors Championship this year at Mottram Hall, and they always ensure the finest hospitality is provided to the players. We look forward to returning to De Vere Oulton Hall in 2014, for what will be the 100th staging of this historic event"

De Vere Oulton Hall offers golfers of all standards a testing, yet enjoyable 27 championship hole complex in stunning picturesque surroundings, supplemented by a newly refurbished, 152-room 18 th century mansion hotel, exquisite dining options, and world-class leisure facilities.
