The heat is on as Fathers & Sons square off in the desert!

July 16, 2013

Red Golf, promoters of the European Father & Son Golf Championship, have announced that the 2013 Grand Final will be held at the excellent Valle del Este Golf Resort in the sunny, hot desert of Almería, Andalucía, during the school half-term holidays from 28th October to 3rd November.

Almería is situated in the most southerly eastern point of Spain, within the autonomous region of Andalucía, and boasts more hours of sunshine than anywhere else in Spain - one good reason why the area is so popular with golfers!

Tournament Director Toby Marsden said, "This is a fantastic bonus for the event. We have negotiated sponsorship with the Andalucía and Almería Tourist Authorities to televise the Grand Final on SkySports. We were looking for a family golf resort in a Southern European destination and we have managed to find one of the warmest and sunniest places in Europe! It's an important consideration, as although we are running a serious championship to find the best Father and Son team in Europe, equally it's all about giving competitors and their family an unforgettable holiday experience. We feel we have found it in this area and in Valle del Este."

2012's youngest competitor

The championship is a 54 hole two-ball better-ball Stableford for both handicap and scratch titles. Fathers and sons come from all over Europe to compete and there is no age restriction, only a maximum handicap of 24 with ¾ stroke allowance.

At last year's Championship the oldest competitor was Norman Taylor from South Africa at 90 years of age with his 57 year old son Leslie 57, and the youngest son was just 10 years old.

The event celebrates the family, and the chance for fathers and sons to spend quality time together. Many teams come sporting identical team outfits which adds to the exciting, colourful spectacle. The promoters try to run the event as closely to a PGA event as possible, giving ordinary golfers an opportunity to the experience, pressure and excitement of a pro event. Former Tour player and PGA pro Toby says, "Although we have some very experienced Professionals playing in our event, like Ryder Cup golfer Paul Broadhurst, we also have many ordinary club golfers. We give them first tee announcers, loudspeakers, giant scoreboards, referees, press, SkySports cameras, caddies and crowds.

“Our main aim is to give some of the younger players invaluable tournament experience and help springboard them on to greater successes in their careers. Our dream is one day that one of our lads will go on to become a famous Tour player, and we can proudly say we contributed in a small way."

Off the golf course, the competitors and their families congregate in the hotel resort to enjoy each others' company.

The Championship starts with a welcome drink reception and finishes with a lavish Gala Dinner and Prize Giving, as well as all being together in the hotel in the evenings on a half-board basis.

During the week, additional competitions including Longest Drive and Nearest the Pin, Putting and Chipping events are held.

The event held its fifth anniversary last year at Lumine Golf Resort on the Costa Dorada (near Barcelona), Spain, where the very experienced British champions Graham (1 hcp) and son James (pro) Ruth made event history by becoming undisputed champions, winning both the Handicap and the Scratch crowns under the glare of the SkySports cameras.

They intend to come back and defend their titles, but their presence will depend on James' Tour schedule and whether he manages to qualify for the end of season Challenge Tour Championship.

Toby Marsden adds, "I have been involved in many golf events over the years, but this one is very special. The families are what make it so successful. It is one big festival from the moment everyone arrives. Old friends meet, and new friendships are formed for life. It's all about fun and having a great time. Anyone who has a dad or son, or grandad that plays golf should join in this event."

The event package includes tournament entry, transfers, accommodation, half-board, golf, prizes, welcome drink and Gala Dinner.
