Spitfire Fly Past marks Centenary Captain’s Day at Garforth Golf Club

June 17, 2013

Those on the course and in the clubhouse at Garforth Golf Club have a special treat in store on 23 June, with an early afternoon flypast of a Spitfire from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight stationed at RAF Coningsby.

One of the highlights of any golf year is Captain's Day and this year at Garforth it will be extra special, as the club marks its Centenary. Captain's Day will be one of the highlights of a centenary Week of golf competitions for members, and further events throughout the year.

200 golfers are expected to golf on Captain's Day, pausing their matches as the Spitfire, piloted by Wing Commander Paul Godfrey, will undertake three circuits of the golf course at approximately 2.00pm.

Garforth Golf Club has a significant historic link with aviation and the Spitfire in particular; Famous pilot Sir Augustus Walker GCB,CBE,DSO,DFC,AFC was born in Lowther Cottage, Garforth. His father was J H Walker, one of the founders of the club back in 1913.

"This is a significant coup for The Club. I want to thank one of our members Mike Holliday for arranging this for the Golf club in this our Centenary year," commented Andy King, Garforth Golf Club Centenary Captain 2013.

There is more to come in Centenary Year at Garforth, with highlights including a Centenary Dinner at the end of June, an Edwardian Golf day in July, a Family Fun Day in August. Garforth Golf Club will also host the prestigious MacKenzie Medallion Golf Tournament in September.
