Is golf insurance necessary?

April 5, 2013

No doubt like most enjoyable activities, the cost of playing golf has increased, but Golfplan International Golf Insurance wonders what financial factors have had the most impact in recent years.

Looking at the golf travel market, a survey of over 2,400 golfers showed that almost two thirds had taken an international golf break and compared to five years before, 56% had spent more on their travel. Naturally, the total cost was a key element and 65% of respondents said that price was an important factor in their decision on where to go and where to stay. So much so that almost a third had stayed in self-catering accommodation, making it the number one choice.

How much spent was affected by the age of the golfer travelling, with those under 30 more likely to stay in self-catering or all-inclusive accommodation and the over 50s most likely to have spent more overall than on previous trips.

74%, of the golfers surveyed said increasing airport costs had an effect on their travel plans and the highest number of all, over 80%, agreed that the cost of transporting golf clubs had an impact on their decision to take international golf breaks.

You can't insure against the increasing costs of travel, but you can certainly make sure some of your other - perhaps unexpected - golfing outgoings are looked after. For instance, with a golf insurance policy from Golfplan, you can claim towards your club membership fees if illness or accident, on or off the golf course, prevents you from playing. You can even claim up to £300 to buy the customary round of drinks after scoring a hole in one.
