Tournament raises £237,220 for Help For Heroes

November 20, 2013

Wentworth kindly hosted a small but important cheque presentation on Tuesday 19th November, as National Golf Club Challenge Patrons Sam Torrance and Mark Foster presented Mark Elliott, Help for Heroes Head of External Operations, and Band of Brothers member Mark Taylor, with a cheque for £237,220 to help fund the great work Help for Heroes does in supporting those members of the Armed Forces who have suffered life-changing injuries or illness while serving their country.

The money was raised by the popular National Golf Club Challenge (NGCC) competition, sponsored in 2013 by Volvo Car UK. The National Golf Club Challenge is a national inter-club tournament which invites golf clubs throughout the UK to compete against each other, at the same time as collectively fundraising for Help for Heroes.

WO2 Mark Taylor, The Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment, is currently a resident at Tedworth House in Wiltshire, one of four Help for Heroes-managed Recovery Centres. Mark suffers from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, identified in January 2004, and golf has been one of the Battle Back Sports Recovery activities he has participated in. Mark is currently Battle Back Golf Champion.

Commenting on the presentation, Sam said "I'm honoured to present this wonderful donation on behalf of the NGCC team and the generous golfers who have taken part in this year's events. It's a huge amount of money going to a very deserving cause. May it do an awful lot of good for those who seriously need it as a result of serving our country."

Mark Elliott, Head of External Operations, Help for Heroes said "The National Golf Club Challenge is a wonderful example of thousands of people coming together to 'do their bit' - from the hundreds of golf clubs which took part in this year's challenge, the golf professionals and caddies, the sponsors and organisations who donated auction prizes, to the NGCC team itself; it's a fantastic team effort. Servicemen and Women who are injured today will still need our support for life. They are still fighting their own battles and, with your continued help, we will ensure they don't fight alone."

Additionally, the NGCC team hosted the very successful NGCC Auction which ran throughout the golfing season, auctioning superb golfing holidays, experiences, memorabilia, equipment and much more. Huge thanks going to the Great British Golfing community who responded so generously - and to NGCC partners who contributed significantly to the national fundraising effort.

The 2013 NGCC events have been a wonderful success and I am indebted to all those who have embraced our state of mind this year," commented Stacey Jeffries, NGCC Event Director, "Due mainly to the help and support from great sponsors and especially the generosity of golfers up and down the land that have contributed so positively to a cause close to all our hearts we have proved that if we unite together, we really can move mountains".

Stacey went on to say "2014 will be a very important year as our soldiers withdraw from Afghanistan - and as golfers we have the unique chance to unite once more to make the 2014 National Golf Club Challenge the biggest year yet, to honour our serving and veteran Forces personnel after over a decade of sacrifice endured to protect our own freedoms. In the year our Heroes come home, how fitting would it be to have every Golf Club in the United Kingdom unite with us, just to say thank you."

There is no registration fee for golf clubs to take part in the National Golf Club Challenge; the only requirement is to raise as much money as possible for Help for Heroes while running a qualifier event. Golfers from each event have the chance to progress to regional Semi Finals and a National Final at the fabulous Turnberry Resort sponsored by Your Golf where some sensational prizes can be won.

As well as Sam Torrance and Mark Foster, National Golf Club Challenge patrons include Lee Westwood, Paul Casey, Simon Khan, Marc Warren, Oliver Fisher, Melissa Reid, Dominic Bott, Nell McAndrew and Pollyanna Woodward.

Golf Clubs can register to take part in the 2014 National Golf Club Challenge at . You can bid on the NGCC online auction supporting Help for Heroes at from December 2013.
