An education at The Home of Golf

May 8, 2013

St Andrews is the very Home of Golf and the seat of Scottish learning. The game has been played on the links for almost 1,000 years - and in 2013, the town's University celebrates its 600th anniversary.

The five red star Old Course Hotel, Golf Resort & Spa has created an indulgent package that combines golf and learning - a 'must' for all golfers who love the game's  history  and who want to improve their game.

General Manager of the resort, Daniel Pereira, says: "Standing outside the hotel, looking across the Swilcan Bridge, you can almost hear the roars that have greeted legends of the game - from Scotland's Old Tom Morris, Tom Kidd and Bob Martin who dominated at the end of the 19th century, to the 'Great Triumvirate' of JH Taylor, James Braid & Harry Vardon. The stars from America - including Bobby Jones and Sam Snead - to the first winners from the southern hemisphere, including Australia's great Peter Thomson and South Africa's incredible Bobby Locke. In more recent times, golfers have become known by a single name - and three in particular came to love, honour and respect the Old Course: Jack, Seve and Tiger."

Daniel explains the package, saying: "The world of golf's focus on Scotland is ever sharp with the Open returning to Muirfield this July, the Ryder Cup next year and the Open coming home in 2015. We wanted to create a package that truly reflects golfing history yet gives something back... teaching those who come to St Andrews of the game's traditions as well as providing them with the opportunity to improve their game."

The package - an 'Education at The Home of Golf ' - provides Champagne on arrival followed by three nights 'Five Red Star' accommodation - with all the luxuries you'd expect. Full Scottish Breakfast starts each day, served in the hotel's award-winning  Road Hole Restaurant , high on the fourth floor with panoramic views over the Old Course. During the stay, each guest receives two 45 minute coaching sessions - given by the resort's resident  PGA Professionals  - focusing on elements of your game that need improvement. You will play two 18 hole rounds at the  Championship Duke's Golf Club  - proud host of the 2014 International European Amateur Championship.

Daniel adds: "We have teamed up with The St Andrews Golf Company for a fascinating presentation, providing great insight into the games' evolution and traditions. Guests will also enjoy a visit to the British Golf Museum that overlooks golf's HQ, the R&A - right at the very heart of St Andrews golfing history."

No visit to St Andrews would be complete without a visit to the iconic  Jigger Inn . Bedecked with golfing memorabilia, the Inn has a beer garden that borders the Old Course, giving you a caddies-eye view of passing players as they attempt the Road Hole. You will be welcomed with a pint of our specially-commissioned Jigger Ale to sup where many an Open Champion has celebrated their famous victory! And whilst at the hotel, every golfer worth their salt will take the time to visit and enjoy the incredible Road Hole Bar where more than 250 whiskies are available, representing every distillery across Scotland.

To help you relax - before or after your golf - all have full use of the resort's Kohler Waters Spa - member of the prestigious 'Leading Spas' and voted 'Best Hotel Spa' in the 2012 Good Spa Awards. That includes access to the wonderful Rooftop Hot Tub together with its stunning Thermal Suite with Hydrotherapy Pool, Japanese Steam Room and Sauna. Daniel adds: "Golf sis even at the core of our Spa and we have g Golf-themed treatments and therapies including the Golfer's Massage - designed to ease tension and increase flexibility - as well as the Golfer's Foot Renewal, resorting feet after an exhilarating day of golf. They are sheer bliss!"

The package is priced from £1,135.00 per person, based on two sharing (subject to availability). A custom-fitting service is available at £100 per set of clubs from the St Andrews Links Academy. For any Kohler Waters Spa therapies & treatments, please enquire when speaking with the hotel's Reservations' Team on   +44 (0) 1334 474371 or email
