N.Ireland's first Long Driving Golf Championship launched

June 7, 2013

Lisburn Golf Club is to host Northern Ireland's first ever, 'longest drive' golf championship this July.

The inaugural 'Long Driving Championship of Ulster' will tee off on Monday 1st July, running each evening until Friday 5th July.

The competition, which is open to amateur golfers of all ages and handicaps who hold a GUI membership card, will be held over Lisburn's first hole, a par 5 of 474 yards.

Each night will draw competitors from varying categories, as follows: Monday 1st July will host Over 50s, Tuesday 2nd July will be open to ladies and Wednesday 3rd July will welcome Under 18s. Contenders on Thursday 4th July will be placed according to handicap in each of the four GUI handicap categories, while the finale on Friday 5th July - which is open to all competitors - will see the Long Drive Champion of Ulster crowned!

Renowned 'big hitter', professional golfer Damian Mooney will be present at the event on Friday 5th July for that night's prize giving, and also to give a long drive demonstration.

There is a £1000 total prize fund for the competition, with prizes being given out nightly, while Lisburn Golf Club is also offering a discounted round of golf for all competitors at just £15 per person.

The competitive sport of long drive golf has been dominated largely by the USA in recent years, with the world's biggest hitters contested annually via the RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship. Professional long drivers can average over 350 yards in competition compared with 300-yard averages from the top PGA Tour drivers.

Lisburn Golf Club's idea to develop and host an Ulster edition of the sport is particularly timely given Lisburn City Council's European City of Sport status for 2013.

Chairman of Leisure Services for Lisburn City Council, Councillor Thomas Beckett said: " It is fantastic that this event is being brought to Lisburn in its year as a designated European City of Sport. I would encourage everyone of all ages and handicaps with a GUI membership to enter into this competition.

"I would like to extend my thanks to Lisburn Golf Club for its excellent efforts in organising the first Northern Ireland Longest Drive Championship with Lisburn City Council, and wish all the competitors the best of luck in becoming Ulster's first Longest Drive Champion.

Captain of Lisburn Golf Club, Dr. Sam Moore, said: "Lisburn Golf Club is pleased to host the Ulster Long Driving Championship in this the year that has seen Lisburn not only achieve the status of European City of Sport, but also, our own member Mr. Ivor McCandless is President of the Golfing Union of Ireland.

"Golfers everywhere always try to improve their length off the tee and this competition will give everyone a chance to compare their driving ability to that of their golfing peers."

He added, "Every competitor will be given a certificate stating the distance of their best drive in the championship.  I look forward to seeing competitors from all over Ulster and beyond."

The competition will run nightly from 6.00pm. Competitors must register their interest and enter the competition via www.lisburngolfclub.com.
