Yorkshire Junior Golfers can play their way to St.Andrews at Leeds Golf Centre

June 17, 2013

The road to St. Andrews will begin at Leeds Golf Centre for Yorkshire's young golfing hopefuls as the 2013 regional qualifiers for the 'Wee Wonders Open Golf Championship' come to the region's premier golf centre. The championships are a series of tournaments held across the summer and the respective regional winners will have the opportunity to compete at the grand final at the famous Old Course.

Leeds Golf Centre will host the regional qualifier on Sunday 23rd June, which is open to any junior golfer from 5 to 12 years old at just £8 per entry. The tournament is a fantastic opportunity for golf's next generation to apply their coaching lessons and further develop their game in an organised, competitive setting.

Nigel Sweet, Operations Manager at Leeds Golf Centre, said: "This is not only a fantastic opportunity for Leeds Golf Centre to promote its facilities and credentials, but a fantastic chance for the many talented junior golfers in Yorkshire to compete and earn themselves an opportunity to play at the home of golf. We've got some very impressive youngsters in Yorkshire and it's great that the region can send a group of young gifted golfers to St. Andrews. Let's hope they bring the title back to Yorkshire!"

Commenting on the launch of Wee Wonders, Duncan Weir, Director of Golf Development at the R&A, added: "Wee Wonders is now firmly established as one of the leading competitions of its type in the world. It offers talented young boys and girls the opportunity to compete and thrive in a series of well organised events. Players who participate in Wee Wonders will receive the grounding they need to go far in golf."

Member of the victorious 2012 Ryder Cup Team and Open Champion, Paul Lawrie, said: "I am a firm believer in encouraging children to take up and enjoy the game at every opportunity. The Wee Wonders Tournament is a brilliant way to give very young golfers throughout the UK and Ireland something to work towards which is fun as well as being competitive."

Rules and Entry qualifications are available on www.weewondersgolf.com and www.golfempire.co.uk as well as downloadable entry forms. Alternatively, contact the Pro Shop at Leeds Golf Centre on 0113 288 6000 for more information.
