Paul Wesselingh defends title at De Vere Mottram Hall

July 3, 2013

Paul Wesselingh was in scintillating form at De Vere Mottram Hall this week, as the Midland region PGA professional accelerated past a stunned leaderboard filled with superstars from the world of golf, to defend his ISPS HANDA PGA Seniors Championship title. The Englishman, who won his first ever professional tournament on the course 19 years earlier, stormed to a final round of 9-under par 64 to finish four strokes clear of the chasing pack, which included Paraguayan Angel Franco and former Ryder Cup Captain Ian Woosnam who finished second and third respectively. The 2012 Champion, who excelled round De Vere Slaley Hall in Northumberland last year, was in stunning form round the newly renovated Mottram Hall this year. The De Vere resort, which was recently re-launched following a multi-million pound investment, was drenched in glorious sunshine all week and played the perfect host for its inaugural ISPS HANDA PGA Seniors Championship.

Wesselingh, who won last year's event in only his third start on the European Senior Tour, ascends to the top of the European Senior Tour Order of Merit with victory in Cheshire. The Kedleston Park Golf Club professional has been a prolific winner of PGA events throughout his career and has now won both of his European Senior Tour titles at De Vere resorts. "I suppose you could say I have become a bit of a specialist around De Vere golf courses," commented Wesselingh. "The course was just awesome. The greens were perfect, and the whole place was in first class condition. Credit has to go to all involved at Mottram Hall, especially the greens staff for getting the course into such supreme condition. You only have to look at the surface of the greens and how the whole venue was set-up to see the quality - it is a credit to De Vere and all the staff."

Guests and dignitaries were unanimous in their praise for De Vere Mottram Hall, the hospitality received from all staff and the success of the extensive £6 million investment made at the Cheshire resort. The refurbishment transformed the resort and has enhanced guest experiences across golf, leisure and accommodation. The success of this weeks' Championship appears to have fully justified the investment; Midori Miyazaki, ISPS Executive Director of International Affairs expressed her delight, "De Vere has been a huge support and just a pleasure to work with. It has been a privilege to be at such a fine estate and the hospitality has been wonderful."

De Vere has remained steadfast in its commitment to golf at every level, demonstrated by the investment at Mottram Hall, its partnership with the PGA, and its unique and acclaimed De Vere Club membership scheme. By investing in the game across its portfolio of resorts, De Vere is encouraging growth of the game across the UK.

Daniel Hodson, Director of Golf, De Vere Group, was delighted with the week, commenting, "We remain steadfast in our commitment to golf at all levels at De Vere and it has been a privilege to welcome such a prestigious event to Mottram Hall. We have been overwhelmed by the level of crowds we have seen throughout the week, which demonstrates the appetite for world class golf in the North West is as strong as ever. We have a worthy champion in Paul Wesselingh, who defended his title in spectacular fashion, and committed title partners in ISPS Handa, that will hopefully see the Championship continue to grow in stature for years to come. A big thank you to all involved and we look forward to hosting the event again next year."
