Greenwood crowned PGA Professional Champion at De Vere Slaley Hall

June 21, 2013

De Vere Slaley Hall in Northumberland played the perfect host to the 2013 Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship, where Lincolnshire-based professional Daniel Greenwood displayed some scintillating form across the four days to take the title by an impressive nine shots. The Englishman took the field by storm on Friday when he closed with a stunning 68 to finish on 8-under par for the week, well ahead of the field as the only player under par for the Championship. The Hunting Course at Slaley Hall was in pristine condition for the players and once again underlined its credentials as one of the leading golf resorts in the UK, having hosted a number of other headline tournaments in recent years.

Greenwood held the lead from day one, where his opening round of 71 in challenging conditions was enough to take his position atop the leaderboard. He continued this impressive play throughout the week to claim the biggest prize of his professional career, finishing nine shots clear of David Callaway in second and 10 clear of former European Tour professional Benn Barham in third. With victory, Greenwood not only picked up a cheque for £10,000, but ensured a return back to the North-east resort later in the year as part of the 2013 Great Britain & Ireland PGA Cup Team. The 2013 PGA Cup will be hosted at Slaley Hall in September, where the GB&I team will compete against the leading PGA Professionals from the USA in the fiercely-contested biennial matches.

The competitive calendar at De Vere Slaley Hall continues to underline resort's fantastic pedigree and build upon its ever-improving reputation. Set amongst picturesque Northumberland moorland, Slaley Hall has played host to a wealth of leading tournaments, including the PGA Seniors Championship for five consecutive years from 2008 and also the Great North Open on the European Tour between 1996 and 2002. The acclaimed Hunting course, designed by renowned course architect Dave Thomas, has welcomed an illustrious list of winners including Lee Westwood, Colin Montgomerie and Retief Goosen.

Keith Pickard, Regional Golf Director, De Vere, commented on the resort's ever-improving reputation and a successful week, "We are proud to be able to welcome such esteemed competitions to Slaley Hall and have been lucky enough to welcome some of the world's best players to the resort. The golf courses underwent significant improvements during the winter months and it appears that these have paid dividends as the course was in phenomenal condition for this Championship. Daniel was the stand-out player all week and thoroughly deserved the victory by finishing well ahead of the field. It is another busy competition schedule for us this year building up to the PGA Cup in September, and with the first class team that we have and the course improvements that have been made, I am more than confident that the resort will continue to be the perfect host for competitors and visitors alike."
