Rory McIlroy tweets Barack Obama for help with game

June 19, 2013

The Holywood man was returning the compliment after he was mentioned by the US President during a speech in Belfast on Monday.

McIlroy, who bent a club out of shape during a frustrating US Open, tweeted: "Nice of Barack Obama to mention me in his speech today in Belfast.

"But I think he should be helping me with my swing after last week! Haha."

President Obama, a keen golf fan, spoke about how he recently met Rory - saying he had been offered some tips on improving his game.

He was addressing a crowd at the Waterfront Hall ahead of the G8 summit in Co Fermanagh.

"I did meet Rory McIlroy last year," the President said. "Rory offered to get my swing sorted - which is a polite way of saying 'Mr President, you need help'."

McIlroy has had his share of difficulties on the golf course this year.

The Ulsterman ended up in the water at Merion's 11th on Sunday and ended up minus an iron after damaging the club too badly to keep using it.

But he later briefly addressed reactions to the incident on Twitter, blaming the influence of the Pennsylvania course.

McIlroy did congratulate eventual winner Justin Rose though, tweeting that it "couldn't happen to a better lad".
