Silver Ponds in Poland

November 14, 2013

In the very center of Bytom, on 26-hectares of post-mining grounds a nine-hole golf course was established. Soon to be doubled in its size. An old mine shaft tower is the showcase of the whole project.

The project is implemented on nearly 100-hectares site of a former Szombierki coal mine in Bytom. The project includes: golf course, single-family residential housing, nursing home and commercial buildings. The symbol of the area, where mining activities were carried out from the half of the 19th century, is the jewel of modernist industrial architecture - a historic 57-meter high 'Krystyna' mine shaft tower.

For the time being, the golf course has 9 holes but ultimately, in two years, there will be 18 holes. It is the first golf course in Poland built on post-mining area. The holes are located among former mining ponds and greenery, on rolling terrain. The golf course was designed by a recognized German expert Christoph Stadler, other experts from Germany and the United States were engaged in the process of its construction.

The idea was to create a new district of the city, bonded by an open golf course, which constitutes a public space between objects. Also, revitalization of the iconic 'Krystyna' shaft is planned. The value of the investments in this area, including the purchase of the property, reaches tens of millions of zlotys.

The project investor is Mr. Michal Goli and his company Armada Development, part of the Katowice-based GC Investment Group.

PROJECT NUMBERS:

•  2,5 km of drainage

•  4 km of irrigation

•  5 trucks of peat from Estonia

•  26 ha area of the golf course

•  30 days/24 h digging the pond on tee 5 and 6
