Tiger Woods Closes on McIlroy in World Rankings

February 8, 2013

After winning his 75 th victory on the PGA tour at the Farmers Insurance Open, the miniscule gap between Woods and current world number one, Rory McIlroy is edging that little bit closer together.

McIlroy has been seated on the number one sport since his USPGA victory in August 2012, but since Tigers victory at Torrey Pines on January 24th, this advantage is now down to a small few precious points.

Now found in 2 nd place in the Official World Rankings, Tiger Woods is only 3.14 points off of the young Northern Irishman; a gap which could find itself narrowed even further before he plays the WGC Accenture Match Play in Arizona on February 20.

So is Tiger back?

After finishing the 2012 PGA Tour on a relative high, punters around the world have forecast 2013 to be the year of Tiger Woods, and so far, the prediction seems to be coming to fruition; although not everyone is convinced. Golf writer, Doug Ferguson says that:

"It's tempting to make bold declarations about the rest of the year based on how Woods played last week, though the finish left just as many questions. And remember, it was only a week ago that Woods missed the cut in Abu Dhabi."

Ferguson has a point, although by the end, Tiger won the fog ridden Farmers Insurance Open quite comfortably (by four shots), he did so only after surviving what can be described as a 'sloppy' back nine.

Speaking to Sky television, Woods said:

"It got a little ugly towards the end, I just lost my concentration a little bit."

Despite this, Woods went on to state that the win has given him confidence for the rest of the season and acknowledge that it was, "a good start to the year."

Although not considered a major event in the tour, the win meant that Tiger walked away with a very comfortable $1,098,000 along with the confidence, and points, to be crowned world number one yet again.
