Odds of women in the R&A?

July 18, 2013

Its seems like the R&A Golf Club are taking the 'ancient' part of their name far too seriously by persevering with a 'no women members' policy. Unfortunately Paddy Power don't think they are set to join the 21 st century any time soon and give odds of 10/1 on female members being admitted before the end of 2015.

The Royal & Ancient Club has a men only membership policy and despite pressure from high profile figures across golf and politics they aren't looking like budging any time soon. The ridiculousness of the club's policies extends down to others which include Muirfield - the venue for this week's Open Championship.

The Augusta National Course, in Georgia, reversed out of its gender discriminatory policies last year and yet the club that helped create the game of golf persist. Paddy Power have given odds of 11/8 on the club not allowing their first female member until a point between 2016 and 2025. More worryingly the odds on the end of their ancient policy not coming until before the end of 2025 are at 4/6.

After the venue for the Masters changed their minds last year there has been increased scrutiny on this year's Open Championships at Muirfield with several players speaking out about the issue - Paddy Power offer 8/1 that the winner of the Open will refer to the ban on female members in their speech.

Augusta's change of heart was helped by former US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice becoming their first female member and Paddy Power think the Royal & Ancient might need some similar persuasion. The Duchess of Cambridge, given her links to St. Andrews plus the fact her title should basically qualify her for membership anyway, is odds of 12/1 to be admitted to the club by the end of 2015.

A Paddy Power spokesman said; "No-one appears to have told the likes of the Royal & Ancient and Muirfield that we are actually in the 21 st century and this sort of thing doesn't fly anymore. We think the odds on them changing their minds any time soon are quite long but maybe some HRH style persuasion would help."
