Locals favourite for World Cup

November 20, 2013

The reformatted Golf World Cup tees off on Thursday in Melbourne with the home duo of Adam Scott and Jason Day as 13/8 favourites to win a fifth title for Australia.

The biennial tournament has changed its format for the 2013 iteration with more of an individual focus and the team element coming from an aggregate of scores after 72 holes. The event has been altered to test out how golf will work at the 2016 Olympics in Rio and Australia Masters Champion Adam Scott is 3/1 favourite for the individual honours.

Scott won the yellow jacket at the same course last week and Matt Kuchar, who pushed him all the way in that tournament, is second favourite in the World Cup odds at 7/1 . Scott's team mate Jason Day is 9/1 third favourite with Ireland's Graeme McDowell as 14/1 fourth favourite.

In the team element the US duo of Kuchar and Streelman will be hoping to defend the title the US team, that included Kuchar, won in 2011. The US have been champions on 24 occasions and are 13/2 to win it again. Their closest rivals in the history stakes are South Africa with five wins and Spain and Australia with four. However, it's Ireland who are third favourites at 9/1 with the team of McDowell and Lowry.

The tournament has attracted criticism for its format that sees 26 international teams compete and 8 individuals, with the "Team" element of the competition set to be overshadowed by the individual side. Given the close scores at the course in the Masters the odds on a playoff deciding the winner is 5/2 whilst a hole in one by any player is 11/4 after Scott Strange bagged an ace last week.

A Paddy Power spokesman said; "A confusing format switch has kept some of the big names away from this week's Golf World Cup but it still promises to be an exciting event. The odds suggest that it'll come down to holders Team USA against hosts Team Australia with Scott and Kuchar the favourites for individual honours."
