2014 Master's Preview

March 28, 2014

Tiger Woods may be the biggest name in golf, but that doesn't mean he'll play in the game's biggest tournament. The current World Number One (for now anyway) has been battling a bad back that has drastically affected his performance in 2014, and may not even enter the field in Augusta.

So with Tiger possibly benched, who should golf fans keep an eye on at the first Major tournament of the year?

Recent history suggests that players seeking their first career Major win are the ones to watch. The last three men to don the green jacket-Justin Rose, Bubba Watson, and Charl Schwartzel-all claimed their first (and to date only) Major Championships at The Masters. In fact, since Zach Johnson's 2007 Master's victory, only two golfers with previous Major victories (Phil Mickelson, Angel Cabrera) have won at Augusta, with Mickelson's 2010 win being the only time a previous Master's champion recaptured the jacket.

With that kind of recent history in mind, one golfer in particular stands out from the 2014 field, Swede Henrik Stenson. The 37-year-old is playing some of the best golf of his life recently, winning both the FedEx Cup and the Race to Dubai in 2013 while finishing 2nd at the 2013 US Open and 3rd at the 2013 PGA Championship. Stenson just finished 5th at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and has the potential to claim the top spot in the Official World Golf Ranking with a victory at the Shell Houston Open prior to The Masters. Coming in at 25-1 odds to win his first Major, well behind 10-1 favorites Woods, Scott, and Rory McIlroy, Stenson could prove a good bet to continue the trend of first-time Major winners claiming the green jacket while simultaneously lining the pockets of gamblers around the world. Those interested in betting on the Masters and other sports online can head to gambling.com to review the top betting sites from around the web.

The trend of first-time winners, the rise of Henrik Stenson, and the intrigue surrounding Tiger's back injury all lend an air of excitement to the first Major tournament of the year, a tournament which could set the tone for the rest of the 2014 golf season.
