Bathgate golfers club together for Official Charity of The 2014 Ryder Cup

July 4, 2014

Renowned golfer Stephen Gallacher was back at Bathgate Golf Club for an evening dedicated to charity, which saw Quarriers, an Official Charity of The 2014 Ryder Cup, receive a donation of £2000 following an ongoing fundraising drive.

Stephen, now ranked 37 th in the world, presented the charity with the donation as part of the club's participation in The 2014 Ryder Cup Charity Challenge. The Challenge is open to golf clubs across Scotland, with participating clubs receiving general admission Season Passes for the Match at Gleneagles in exchange for raising funds on behalf of the Official Charities - Friends of St Margaret's Hospital, Perth & Kinross Disability Sport and Quarriers.

Having two former Ryder Cup captains, Eric Brown and Bernard Gallacher, learn their trade on its course, Bathgate has a proud association with the contest and members pulled out all the stops to raise the funds for Quarriers, the club's chosen Official Charity of The 2014 Ryder Cup. Fundraising activities included a whisky and wine tasting event, raffle and a competition across the club's opening tournaments where the best aggregate scorer received season passes. The club will also have tickets up for grabs at its 25th Pro-am and a special members match which will take place in September.

The money raised will help Quarriers' pioneering Coaching for Life initiative which offers support and guidance for young people who are facing disadvantages such as homelessness, leaving care, emotional trauma and neglected education.

As well as the Quarriers presentation, the event, titled 'An Evening with Stephen Gallacher', was also in support of Stephen's own charity, the Stephen Gallacher Foundation. Set up in 2012, the Foundation aims to offer children from as young as 4 years old the chance to learn how to play the game and enjoy it both socially and competitively as they grow and develop. Since its inception, over 2,500 children have already benefited from the Foundation.

Speaking of the event and the club's fundraising efforts, Stephen said: "It was a fantastic gesture for the club to host the evening and I was delighted to have been a part of it.

"The club has always been extremely supportive of the Stephen Gallacher Foundation and it's great to see it backing The 2014 Ryder Cup Charity Challenge as well. Quarriers provides a lot of important services and I know the money raised by the Bathgate Golf Club members is going to a very worthy cause."

Lesley-Anne Patrick, Project Manager of Quarriers 2014 Ryder Cup Appeal, said: "It is extremely fitting that Bathgate, a club steeped in Ryder Cup history, was the first to sign up to The 2014 Ryder Cup Charity Challenge and we're very grateful that Bathgate's members have raised these funds which will help our Coaching for Life initiative.

"All funds raised from The Challenge, and our 2014 Ryder Cup Appeal, is helping the charity deliver the initiative across the country, providing life changing opportunities for hundreds of young people."

Gerard Flannigan, Secretary of Bathgate Golf Club, said: "As soon as we received the application form for The 2014 Ryder Cup Charity Challenge we decided we had to take part and we're immensely proud to have been the first golf club in Scotland to sign up.

"The 2014 Ryder Cup Charity Challenge is a unique way in which all the members at Bathgate can continue the close association the club has had with The Ryder Cup over many years and raise money for such a good cause.

"We've all had a great time raising the money for Quarriers and we look forward to continue supporting the charity in the future."

A range of tickets for The 2014 Ryder Cup are still available for clubs wishing to support the Official Charities. For more information about exclusive Season Passes or VIP tickets, please contact Lesley-Anne Patrick at 2014rydercup@quarriers.org.uk or on 01505 616051.
